View Full Version : What happened to my caliper?!

My car started to knock from the rear end while in reverse and it's getting worse. My body shop guy pointed out that the drivers side one does not look like the passenger side one. Anyone ever seen this before? Is the caliper repairable w some kind of rebuild kit or do I need to order a new one? Is it even safe to drive? I've been driving this way for weeks already...

looks like its about time for a brake job to me, based on the looks, prolly the e brake shoes came off their backing plate and are running loose inside the mini ebrake drum.

My guess would be the pads were never installed correctly.
Or the mounting clip has worn letting the pad slip.

I see a lot of oil, is your axle shot too?

I am pretty sure I need brakes, I actually already have the pads bc I figured that was coming. As for Ebrake pads, I never use the ebrake though I have accidentally pushed them getting in the car more than once, but I always release them as soon as I notice what I did, but maybe? I imagine they're as old as the car! And yeah, I've been told that wheel has a slight wobble that hasn't moved after getting a tire rotation. Is there an easy way to tell what's causing the wobble, like which part needs replacement?

If that's gear lube I see then the seal is gone and prolly so are the bearing and the axle.
So for parts, that will be 3 cans of Brakleen, 3 qts of 75W-140, a new seal, a new bearing, and a new axle.
...and a diff cover gasket.

I'd remove the wheel(s) and see what's wrong and leaking.

I hope to check it out today after work depending if my dad is free. He's more mechanically inclined. I can follow instructions, but he really knows what to look for.

If you don't use the ebrake then take them off, you don't have to use them for them to rot and have pieces off into the drum, especially since they are prolly original .

Yeah, just disable a safety feature of your car because $40 worth of e-brake pads and an hour of your time is far too much effort to expend to keep your car working properly. After all, there are no hills in this country or other possible reason an e-brake could be useful.

In MA, if the e-brake doesn't work you fail inspection. Ask me how I know.

Agreed............
Get in the habit of using it and you'll not have problems with it.

As RF Overlord said above, some states require e-brakes to be functional. It is a requirement in Virginia

Other people have taken them off as stated earlier in the thread, go re-read..If they are there and you don't use them what's the difference? Most people today cant even use a turn signal let alone an ebrake. it was merely a suggestion to eliminate crap rolling around in the drum maybe causing a worse failure yet like pieces falling out into the road and running over them at highway speeds causing a blowout for the guy behind you all along while you are oblivious to the detriment behind you. There are far more worse things that drivers lack attention to than damn ebrakes

I don't see the stainless steel hardware on the caliper mount. When those are missing the pads wear grooves into the bracket causing what you're seeing. If there are grooves worn in you can build them back up by welding, and then grind them smooth or you would have to remove the axle and replace the backing plate bracket assembly.

Well the mystery must remain a bit longer. Tomorrow I'm hoping weather cooperates and we'll dig into it then.

Kind of Like our adjustable pedals. Pretty sure mine are broke since majority of us have switched to Curless' pedal repair.
But I never use the adjustable pedals and probably never will....

Fixed it...... had a P71 at our depot, axle had wore the bearing out, and, had been grinding into the housing to the point it made it oblong, then the axle broke off. We wound up putting in a new rear end......

Actually ebrake on an auto trans vehicle is a waste. No big deal in southern states but up in the rust belt when someone with an automatic uses the thing it ends up stuck on, cooks the shoes, seals, bearings... = expensive repair.
On top of that, the a$$wipes at ford used that useless ebrake design on a 4000+ lb car. They don't hold at all. If they had used the known good caliper ebrake system that at least holds, then there may be a plausible reason for it to be on the car.
Rotors off 1st time = ebrake shoes gone = no headaches.

I think waiting too long on brakes is a mistake because weird things like this can happen, pads are shot, rust on caliper/pad slides, those should be cleaned and greased. clean ebrakes with wd-40. The inside of your rotors may be heavily rusted.
also since you may already be doing:
seals, axles, bearings, oil. id suggest a new carrier, perhaps gears and a diff cover with drain plug.. Labor will be 300-400 so replace everything once!
If metal got in there the whole rear assy is suspect.

Ok, so we took the wheel off today and the pads on that side had been wearing off diagonally. That bent axle is causing a wobble so when I hit the brakes, the pads hadn't been making proper flat contact. That axle does need to be replaced asap it seems. Bob, I'd like to take you up on that offer as soon as our schedules permit, and I'll b sure to bring the alternator!
