View Full Version : Rough cold engine idle

This appeared right after I installed a K&N filter - the first one for my car. I followed K&N's instructions and removed the air box to install the filter, which required disconnecting the air sensor. The motor runs a rough idle when cold, but give it a shot of throttle and it settles out. No problems once the motor is warmed.

I cleaned up the air box, and it may be that I got a piece of paper towel stuck on the sensor inside the box. Whatcha think -- take it out and look, or is the EEC just expecting the OEM filter and this new K&N is giving it an unexpected shot of cold air?

By the way, the K&N fits the box better, with a rubber seal around the edge the OEM filter does not have.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong....

Since the sensor was disconnected, the filter replaced with the K&N which is supposed to flow better, I would suspect that the ECC is learning the new parameters for which it must adjust to. It's just like disconnecting the battery to clear out any codes, once reconnected, the computer must readjust itself to your driving style/conditions. I believe this takes several cycles to completed the adjustment process......

Hopefully, it will clear up

Well, in my case, the EEC was trying to learn new parameters that included the idiot installer not tightening the clamp on the intake hose. Once this was done, the problem stopped.

Boy, I am extremely glad I noticed this before I made myself look like an even bigger idiot by crying to Scott at Team Ford about it.:bigcry:

Donny:
I just bought a Fram "Air Hog" rectangular oiled air filter (K&N clone) tonight, unclipped the airbox, and unhinged the retainers and slipped the new filter in! I did clean the air box out with some 409 and some paper towels (the top of the air box was still clean), and the Fram filter has that nice rubbery seal too--fits real nice and snug in that factory air box!
