My heater blower was noisy last winter sometimes when it would first start up. Turned defroster on for the first time last week and am getting nothing. The controls light up and the buttons change the settings, but nothing happens. I'm guessing the blower motor died, or it could possibly be the rotary switch? I'm guessing the blower motor would be a PITA to replace based on past experience with other cars. Anybody got any other ideas?

Usually the BMC.
Blower motor is easy to change, even easier than the BMC.
Ford changed the wiring design on the motor, some cars will have an adapter cable.

Looks pretty inexpensive. I'll try that first. Where is it located?

BCM behind passenger cam cover. It is hard to reach well, there is a write up in the DIY section here. Pm Fastblackmerc for repaired BCM. Ford replacement may do same thing at some point.

About $40 online, RU-572 aftermarket part #.
Blower motor speed control module.

Try tapping the BCM with a screwdriver, if the blower works the BCM is bad.

I'd recommend a Ford part as the aftermarket ones tend to be unreliable.

I do have a repaired BCM if needed. PM me.

Thanks everybody. I checked out the DIY thread and tried the screwdriver tapping trick and it didn't work, but I think this is likely enough to be the culprit that it's probably worth trying. I'll report the results when I get to it. Right now, the weather is nice and I have a bunch of other stuff going on, but I'll have to address this soon as it's already starting to get cold in the morning.

If the blower was making noise, chances are it's the blower motor.

BMC. Blower wasn't coming on at all. I think the noise I remembered was incidental, maybe foreign material (leaf) somewhere in the system, as it seems gone now. BTW this was a pain to replace, mainly because I broke the heater hose T and had to walk to the store (nearly a mile) to get a new one. Anyone considering this might want to pick one up in advance as they are relatively inexpensive. Also, it's hard to maneuver the thing out of it's hole because the fins like to get caught on the edges of the hole. For $100, I might consider just taking it to the dealer the next time, but now that I've done it, it might be easier.
