My cars running fine but threw two codes the other day, P0171 and P0174. Since they're very vague codes, and the cars running fine, what's the most likely problem here?

Could be maf needs cleaning, a vacuum leak, possible 02 sensors

Lean codes

I bet you have a vacuum leak, or leak engine side of mass air flow

Yeah the list is a mile long! Engine mechanical condition, fuel injector problem, ignition misfire, idk why they can't be more specific! It's like OBD 1 all over again...

Where are reading all these? It's a lean condition usually caused by only a few things that we mentioned.

The print out from the scanner from Auto Zone.

I'm not a big proponent of autozone diagnosis. Yes they read codes in hopes of selling you parts and most electrical stuff non returnable if opened etc.

If it is both banks I would take a look at the intake gaskets or something central on the upper plenum. My guess is your PVC elbow. But take a close look at the gaggle of vacuum lines on the firewall under the wiper cowl.

Take the codes. Put em on a Google search and it comes back to lean condition

I have obd1 on the GNs and its straight forward

Code 31. O2 lean
Code 13 waste gate solenoid bad ground in transmission or short to ground or fuse

I guess with experience you learn what the main issue is

Most likely it's a vacuum hose leaking, the maf only reads within certain parameter and same with 02s. Those are not the issue, they are detecting a leak and giving you the lean code for you to fix it

Pop your hood and quadrant off the split hose

Well it just ran rough for a couple minutes and stalled on me. Started right back up though. But yeah, now it's running real choppy. Does that help narrow it down?

Prolly vacuum leak as the others predict. Maf is trying to compensate for it

Turbov6Bryan

Have you popped the hood and even looked?

this.
If it started 'all of a sudden' and it feels like a vacuum leak, both codes are lean which indicates too much air = vacuum leak.
look for the easy stuff first - follow all the vacuum hoses you can see. Look for any source that might have been capped, and the cap fell off.
probably a dried hose or one got worn or came off.....then look for any intake tube leaks after the MAF sensor.

+1 on PCV hose(its usually collapsed making visual diagnosis very easy)

LOL at complaints of OBD diagnostic codes - YOU DIDNT EVEN KNOW THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG UNTIL IT STALLED

An old time method for vacuum leaks on much older cars was to spray starting fluid in small areas of engine stating away from the intake and if the pitch of the idle changed then you pinpointed an area where a vacuum leak was. Not sure if that practice is recommended on these later model Cars. And don't be forum posting and driving

So what is that part called exactly so I don't sound ignorant tomorrow at the parts store. Speaking of, can I get that at a regular parts store or am I gonna have to go to the stealership?

There is really no name for it at the part stores. Just take it in and match it up to the vacuum adaptors or even a short hose that you can cut up to get the desired piece.

Dealership would probably be clueless as well considering most of their parts look up only show a 2V..

In a pinch you can use two pieces of hose of different sizes (to fit inside of eachother) to create the reducer part of this PCV line. Otherwise call Ford tomorrow they can still get it.

just by the diagram? I noticed that also.
It is clearly listed for 4V and 03/04 Marauder only..
I wonder what you'd get if purchased

Everything I've ever actually needed them to look up always comes back to the 2V pics and I end the conversation with "never mind, I'll find it"

I'm usually too much in a hurry to wait for the wrong part. [emoji4]

Hey guys, problem solved, Champ had the line I needed and its back to purring like a big cat again😊 Thanx everyone for helping me get this figured out and done! Now if the rain will let up today, I still have a steering related sensor to clean and hopefully exercise the ghost in there.
