What are the symptoms of a axle or axle bearing going bad ? I had the rear tires & wheel road force balanced. It helped but still present. Then I just bought new tires because they were so worn. Thought maybe a belt was bad. Even with the new tires I have a vibration coming from the rear at 70 mph and above.

My experience (2 cars) has been noise first, then a leak started then a slight vibration to follow if I let it go. Just a vibration without any other symptoms could be something else. Many things could cause a vibration.

Bad axles and bearings do cause vibration, sometimes described as rumbling. It is noticeably different from a wheel or tire, which can be felt rhythmically in the seat or steering wheel.

Too add how can you tell if it is the ring & pinion ?

I had some rumbling come from the rear, as well as some clicking here and there. As stated before me, the low faint rumble was constant, not rhythmic as it is with balance issues.

Try re-indexing the driveshaft.

Wump.....Wump.....Wump sound from the rear that changes frequency with speed!!:(
Pull the magnetic "Fill Plug" and check for shiny metal particles.......mine was covered and about 2 inches long with debris....UGH!!:shake:
The magnet will help prevent damage to the bearings and gears by catching the debris!!
New axles, bearings and seals.......ain't a bad job either!!
Good Luck!!
