Replaced battery on my 06 grand marquis. Started car and the instrument cluster was out. Turned off and restarted, still no joy. Decided to try and drive around briefly with no IC gauges to see if anything else was wrong- discovered the car had no power steering for the first few seconds, it would kick in after driving a few feet.

Disconnected battery, waited a few minutes, reconnected. Voila! Everything worked. Fast forward a couple weeks and it happened again. Now disconnect/reconnect battery does nothing. The problem seems permanent.

When I start the car and all the dash gauges are supposed to light up briefly, only one comes on (airbag light I think). When it goes out a second or two later (like it's supposed to), my dash cluster is totally dark. Nothing on, nothing works. No dummy lights, no odometer, no message center, the tach and analog speedometer don't work either.

Also the power steering... none for the first couple seconds while backing up or pulling way from curb, then it's suddenly there and works fine til I shut the car off again.

All other lights still work (interior door/dome, radio, a/c, headlights, etc).

Anybody heard of this or know a likely culprit?
I've done several repairs on this car, some with generous help from posters here, but I don't even know where to begin on this one. thanks in advance

Start with the basics and check all the fuses

Check the battery connection at the small fuse box under the hood. These tend to get corroded and can cause weird problems.
