Yesterday I was hot rodding around and the car died at a light.
I fired it back and it started fine. I put it into drive and it died almost instantly. After a few attempts I got it running in gear, but it makes a whiny noise like a drill. Even if I drive it 5mph the noise goes up in pitch and tempo... Yet the car seems to move fine.
Park and neutral will sound normal. Reverse, drive 1 and 2 sound like a drill even if stationary.
I was told this could be the torque converter trying to catch something while in gear. Possibly I could pull an electronic so the car is in constant lock up, or not in lock up at all. I don't recall.
Is there anything I should check for as of this weekend? If. I find nothing it will go to a shop early next week, but I want to know what to check out first.
Trans fluid level is good, full and doesn't smell burnt. That's all I got so far.
Thanks in advance.

sounds like a convertor/pump failing.
I'm not sure you can force the convetor to do anything without doing it through the ECM.
Take it to te shop before it grenades the transmission.

Will do come early next week.

This. Or a bad TCC solenoid or the plastic harness that clips on to it.

yup.
Still the shop for him, not fixing that in your driveway with a socket and guitar ;)

Where is this? Inside or can I go under the car and find this? I am thinking it can be something simple, the sound doesn't sound anywhere near a bad rear end... worst breaking sound I ever experienced.
yup.

What driveway? :depress:
Bob, I will google, but I really have a feeling something is lose and this isn't a total loss... yet.
EDIT: Bob, can I get to this solenoid by dropping the trans pan? I found it on-line, but cannot find the location on our cars.

Dom, if you drop the pan, looking at the driver's side you'll see 3 of the solenoids...the 2 square ones are the shift solenoids, and the TCC is the round one. They're held on by an 8mm and a 10mm bolt. Should be at 90-100 inch-pounds.
You'll also see the black plastic "lead frame" which takes the place of the old individual wiring harness. Gently push down at each of the 4 connection points to be sure it's snapped into place securely.

It's right on the valve body. The make of car is not going to change the location on the 4R70 trans. Google it, it's easy. It's also just a guess. Keep in mind that it gets its info from other sensors as well..
Still a cheap part known to go bad, and easy swap.
This solved my old work van from stalling at red lights and the feeling of pulling a trailer with no brakes when trying to stop.

Now that I know how to get to them, how do I determine one is bad?
Touch them and if one is lose that's the bad one?
Should I have someone put the car in gear and keep it stationary and hear out which one is making the sound?
I have no idea here.

Hopefully it's a simple issue and you get your baby back on the road soon! On the scale of broke sounds, I'd rather have a broken trans than a broken motor.
Motorhead350

What is a way to determine if a solenoid is bad?
I wanna tear it apart before sundown, but don't know what to do after that.
justbob
10-11-2015, 04:37 PM
You were going to tear it down one hour before sundown with no plan? Your nuts Dom. You replace it on a gamble and cross your fingers. They are cheap. Meaning once the pan is off you swap them, not test. Without knowledge and proper tools or letting a shop look at it, that's really your only choice.
If that don't work then off to the next guess.

I don't start anything with out a plan Bob, this is why I ask ton of questions before I even jack up the car.
Ok. Thanks and I'll see what happens.

I believe you will now have opened your transmission, with no experience, bought and replaced an electrical part, filling it with $$ of fluid, and still be going to the shop ASAP before you grenade the transmission.
I really hope you post up that it solves your problem, I want to be wrong...

I have done nothing except research and talk to others.
The TCC solenoid is a dealer only item, so I cannot do anything tonight.
As of now the car is sitting, but no longer stalls in gear. Still feels like it has drive to it too.... what I mean is it seems fine, it just makes this noise. I haven't driven it at all though after I flat towed it home with the van.

What's wrong with reusing it on a guess repair? It's not like it's going to magically get worse once removed. IMO a more foolish move would be replacing the filter and oil on a guess.

Good point I was looking at it with the idea of introducing debris or other crap to the fluid.

now that is has become a sporradic stalling, but constant noise, bring it to the shop before you grenade the tranny. ;)

From the people that have seen the video, money is on the trans pump.

I've bought all my transmission stuff from Makco Transmission Parts http://www.makcotransmissionparts.com/AODE.html
When I did the Jmod, I went ahead and replaced the TCC and EPC solenoids along with some of the pressure regulators.
I think this might be the TCC solenoid for the 2003 4R70W http://www.makcotransmissionparts.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Session_ID=a2fbd2 a755912a95fb6ee481483b9759&Screen=PROD&Product_Code=76425BB
I would call and ask them first before ordering. They also have everything else for the transmission as well.

no laughing, it's just transmissions are rarely repaired without r+r, espescially noises and erradic shifts.

Today or tomorrow I will know if it's a lose bolt for a TC, flexiplate or flywheel.
It's at a shop, I had it towed over yesterday. The trans comes out today though or tomorrow.

It is the torque converter and I was told it was beyond repair.
I am currently looking for a used high stall if anyone has one please message me.

If the converter has disintegrated, that crap is through your trans, lines and cooler, I hope they are planning on rebuilding your trans.... Ask Jerry about this, he just lived it, and had his rebuilt trans rebuilt again, this time with the converter fixed.

It was my torque converter.
A stock one went back in and I stopped driving in time to save the transmission. Trans was flushed too.
Back on the road, but slowest it's been in over half its life.

I would have a hard time with that. I'd probably break something and have a DNF and minus the car.
My brother in law has a TDI Wagon. Whoever can go farthest on a single tank of fuel wins.

BTW I know what you mean about going tripple digit speeds for a few hours on end. You have to go up like 5mph every 30 minutes or your get bored.
