Are there any problems other than decreased engine performance, with using anything less than premium fuel?
I know what you thinking... Just use premium fuel right? But it is not always Available here.

Aloha!-
If you don't experience detonation or pinging with a lower grade- it's cool. If you do, your stuck driving with the higher octane.

Not always available? Ack! Hmm, there goes the master plan of moving to hawaii... Sigh...

The 04's have dual knock sensors making them a little less susceptible to detonation from lower octane fuels. Your earlier post said you had an 03 if I remember correctly with a single knock sensor. It should run ok with mid-grade but make sure you listen for knock and pinging.
Don't some of the tuner programs have methods of tuning for lower grade fuel?
I was wondering about mid grade myself because it falls between recommended and super premium. What specific octane is required?

According to the owner's manual, 91.

That, and of course the cost of petrol in that state! I would also feel too claustrophobic there as well since it's not very big.
I understand that the manual calls for 91 octane but I guess my question was that when I look at the pumps the three grades are 87, 89 and 93 octane. How much is the performance degraded if I use 89 octane?????

The times I've filled up with 89 due to no 93 available or it being $2.50 a gallon, I don't notice a decrease in performance.

I get flamed for even saying so, but my wife's has always had 87 run in it. No problems and it has over 26k mi on it now. It is stock. I won't run low grade in mine, as it is highly modded and runs a lot of timing.
