View Full Version : Overheated fuel pump??

I installed a kill switch to disable the fuel pump some time back. After putting 600 miles on my car in 4 days making my work rounds, the car suddenly died. I knew right away it was fuel related as it sputtered to a stop. I disconnected the wiring and listened for the fuel pump to come on when I turned the key. Nothing. After about 20 minutes, it came back online and I was able to drive home, no problem. I guess I used too thick of a gauge of wire and it overheated or messed up the voltage to the pump. I used high quality 12 ga. wire. It's an Aeromotive Stealth. Any worries on long term fuel pump damage? I can't decide if I should change it out or not.

What is "too thick of a gauge wire" and what would that have to do with it??
Sorry but you lost me!!:(

I just revised my post as you wrote. 12 gauge. If the wire is too thick, the resistance can be too great, causing issues. Just like too thin of a wire carrying excessive amps can cause a fire.
Not an expert on electronics, ohms, amps, voltage, etc. I just want to know if I possibly shortened the life of the pump and should change it.

Heavy gauge wire isn't going to kill/overheat a fuel pump, hell thats a popular mod!

Thicker wire = less resistance

Ok, well that's why I'm asking. I have it backwards. Duh. I guess maybe the fuel pump is going. Thanks.
But still, you wouldn't wire a fuel pump with battery cable. So at what point is too heavy a gauge wire too much?

But when you add an additional 8' of wire things change, no? Actually 16' since it goes from the fuse to the dash and back again. Running power equipment with too long an extension cord can damage them.

So at what point is too heavy a gauge wire too much?Electrically, there's no such thing as "too heavy" a gauge. The only constraint is the ability to route it and connect it at each end.

I run 10 gauge to the headlights in my Buick. Why? Because I can. Wire size does not cause issues.

Running power equipment with too long of an extension cord of the wrong gauge wire can ruin them.
I can safely run my hazard fraught welder with a 30ft extension cord of 10 gauge wire. I cant use a regular 14gauge extension cord because it limits the power the machine can recieve. Your fuel pump didn't overheat from using too large a wire....its impossible. Now whether 12 gauge wire is too small, that depends on how many amps your pump draws. I used 10 gauge for my air compressor thats mounted in the trunk.

Yeah, yeah white man, I didn't think it through. Whatever. I got a bad Aeromotive pump. First I read here that they are great, then I read here that they suck. I still have a Walbro 255 that I'll put back in. I'm glad I left my Boost-A- Pump installed, but turned off.

I had 174,000 miles on my Walbro pump when the motor blew....the pump still worked fine but we put a new one in with the newly built motor since I already had it!!
Put your Walbro pump back in and fogetaboudit!!! :D
