Smells like gears oil to me. Ran fine last night when I parked. I didn't hear any grinding, whirling or groaning from the rear end. Guesses on what failed? It's all in my wheel and leaked a bit onto the driveway as you can see.

Axle seal went out. Replace everything.

I did on my grand marquis. After the car sat for a month, old shock took a dump.

Done it on our grandma keys. Luckily it was just a seal and not a bearing.

So, check if it's the shock. If not, then replace everything?

its an axle seal, if it got on your brake pads, they need replaced too.

Leaking shocks do not smell like gear oil, it has to be axle seal & bearing. Like others said replace it all...axles, bearings, and seals.

Is there an all-in-one kit that's better than the others? My rear end is totally stock btw.

If it's just a seal no need to replace 'everything', just the seal... If it's the bearing and contaminated the rear end, that's a bigger issue.

They sell axle repair bearings to get you by for a while if your axle is grooved which I am sure it is.

It is doubtful that it "just" happened. Had a CV come in the shop, that diver said he never heard a noise either, the rear end axle tube was egg shaped, bearing ate out of it and the axle broke in 2 at the bearing. The brake assembly was holding it together, yet, not a noise was heard.

I would change it all and flush it all out, or you will have problems in the future, that is a guarantee.

I have a similar problem; my seal is leaking, but not totally blown. The inside of my wheel looks like that, but the spray is nowhere near that bad, and it isn't pouring out like that. I know I should take care of it, but I have a complete rear end with 3.55s, trac-lok, & 31 spline axles that I'm freshening up so I can just put that in.

That would be a first.

It is never "just a seal". That is wishful thinking.

This...seals fail sometimes, you may get lucky...maybe not tho.

Yeah mine was just a seal axle and bearing looked great.

Yup, I woke up to that at a friends house on a road trip 450 miles from home. Kinda scary at first. Made it home safe n sound, replaced seals, bearings, and diff oil. Problem solved.
