View Full Version : Axle rebuild

Bought my Marauder a couple months ago with 97k miles, now has 100k. When I bought it the rear axles and bearings had been changed out by a shop right before I bought it and even got the receipt from the shop and warranty (the shop is 3 hours away and did shoddy work so I wouldn't take it back anyhow). So 4000 miles later one of the "supposedly" new axles has let loose, in reality it looks more like they only changed one side and charged for 2. Anyway, with the metal chunks of 2 failed axles floating around in there I'm thinking its time for a full on axle rebuild and I have a friend with some good used 4.10 richmond gears he took out of his stang and put 3.73's in. This is my daily driver and do about 80 percent highway driving, so from your experiences should I do the 4.10 or leave 3.55? Don't see 3.73 as being much of an advantage over stock. Need input please!

you'll lose 2mpg or more pending speeds you run on hiway. just be ready for it.

The bigger question is how much fun will I gain?

Parts are on order, 2 new axles with seals and bearings, differential seal and bearing kit and a ford racing trac-lok rebuild kit, now I have the rest of the week to decide if I want to re-use the 3.55 or put the Richmond 4.10's in......

You'll need a tune or a revised tune at time of install for 4.10

I went through the same delimma, even purchased FRPP 4.10 gears.. But like you I spend most of my driving on highways and occasionally through town.. I sold the gears and kept my 3.55s. I am in the process of doing an Eaton swap, later on down the road I'm going to fortify my 4r70w, and put moser axles and a detroit locker in my rear.. And stay with the 3.55s..

Yeah.... don't install the 4.10's as they are highly overrated.

Used gears are never guaranteed to be a quiet install. Hit or miss, I've had luck, not everyone has..

No on the 31 spline and diff, cant afford it and dont feel it is necessary as I dont beat on the car much and never plan to be putting more than 300 at the wheels EVER. Thought about doing 3.73's but dont think it will be that much of a difference over 3.55. Programmer will have to come later, again money is tight with x-mas coming up. Not too concerned with the 3-400 RPM I will be losing on the highway, I am concerned however with the noise, I know Richmonds are usually noisy anyway, I ran 4.10 richmond in my 91 GT Stang and they were a bit noisy all the time.

Your shifts will be off with 4.10 and no tune

Man I didnt think about that, this is an electronic trans, I am used to the old vacuum trans and manual trans where it didnt matter other than speedo. Well I guess thats the nail in that coffin, have to re-use 3.55's cant afford another 490 for programming.

Member vtwoodsman has listed in his marauder forsale section a sct xcal 3 with Lidio tunes on it . No mention what gear. For $250. Can prolly call Lidio and get it revised for minimal $ it not for 4.10 or get it for 3.55 anywY and enjoy the car better

Reading his ad sounds like it came from the stock car he traded in.

Tunes from lidio are $150 iirc. So you would be in for another $350 with xcal and the tune.

Yes he traded the car and put stock tune in it so the sct is unmarried so prolly has 3.55 tube in it right now.

Looking at Lidio website you can buy Xcal3 with tune for 399.00, still going to try and scrape up a little extra and buy the tune from MartyO though.

If I am thinking correctly it will be shifting earlier correct? If that is the case I can manually shift it for a little bit until I get the tune and use the GPS on my phone for a speedo correct?

Lidio site has not been updated in quite some time. I'm a supporter of MO's..been there twice..MO's price for an xcal4 which is better as sct is phasing out support for xcal3 is not much more than that I believe..You should pm marty

Already did a little over a month ago, scraping up stuff around the garage I dont use or need to sell off right now, GARAGE SALE! I have a cheaper Plasma Cutter laying around I hardly ever use that will prob cover most of the cost. Ordered Ford Racing 4.10's from Summit, going to go that route instead of the used Richmonds, dont want to take the chance on noisy gears, one of the things I love about this car is the luxury and quiet inside. So will prob just live with short shifts or manual shift until I get the tune money. Not driving it daily right now anyway so may be able to hold off until tax return time.
