I found some new Dana 31 spline axle at a very good price. No need, maybe,no need, what do you all thing?

You'll need a new 31 spline carrier too. it's a worth while upgrade IMO for boosted cars if you play hard or run it on the track.

I do not play hard but sometime I do like to make sure she is still got the power. I all found Ford 31 spline spider gears.

I don't believe ford makes 28 spider gears any longer..need a carrier too.. Mo's did mine when inspecting my car found the spider gears chewed up so I upgraded it.

well worth it plus aftermarket carriers are cheaper for 31 splines
Bob Mathis

I did not think you had to change the carrier. I will just leave what I have in.

I may be wrong but I think all you need is 31 spline axles (reuse the ABS tone rings if needed), 31 spline spider gears and cross pin from a 31 spline rear.

^ No, you need a center section as well, as mentioned.
I'd go with one of these :

I have changed my mind. I am going to put 31 spline Ford Racing Traction LOK in and some Dana axles. With 4.10's.

Will I just ordered the Ford Performance Traction Lok 31 spline from LMR. Great price.

I missed the deal on the axles. If some one knows who has some at a good price. I got my 4.10 and the new 31 spline unit will be here today.

You will now need a pulley, tune and Drag Radials to "take advantage".
Bob Mathis

When I put the headers and gears in it will go to Marty for a new tune. I am not going to change the pulley. I have drag radials all ready.

False. This statement just cost the OP more money for install as opposed to a SIMPLE spider swap.

You can use the spring from F-150 , maybe someone can show you the difference with pics.
It does make it tight and an extra clutch disc was not possible.

Just to let some know I looked into a spider gear set up and carbon clutches. The spider gears cost around $190 and that is Ford ones and the carbon clutches coat $95.00. I paid $195 for a complete unit from LMR.

Replace spider gears, replace carrier.. One is totally new clutches and all, one is a patch job with old clutches.. Complete replacement is cheaper.. Think again bright eyes, it was excellent information, and the CORRECT thing to do. Unless you're swinging on someones nuts? Stop cluttering the man's thread.. He made the proper decision based on his research.

Chew on what? You gave INCORRECT information!
Price comparisons can not make up for lack of knowledge.
In any event, he originally just wanted a 31 spline upgrade. Good quality spider kits with pin are $99 online and new carbon clutches are $97 any day of the week. Where is the savings over paying someone to change out the diff? What was a simple axle swap turned into essentially a gear swap.
The amount of misguided "help" around here is scary.

Just changing the spiders is a hack job, if you're in there, do it right and do it all, don't be a slack ass.
No lack of knowledge here, a lot of arrogance on your end no doubt though.
He got the better deal, he's happy, should be end of story, yet you think your input is needed apparently.
Perhaps he's like some of us and can setup his own gears? Maybe you're not as magic or rare as you think you are?

Ummm. FYI I did my own gears.. And how is it a hack job when your replacing all replaceable parts? Never mind, I really don't want to know what you'll come up with next.
Your lack of apology to the OP for telling Jim he was incorrect and that he "needed" a new diff shows your character. Your pity insults further back that up.
Bob Mathis seems intelligent and I'm sure he understands I was merely backing up his first post. The best thing he could do is stop starting threads on here and just consult with Marty and get good solid advice and not opinions.

If they are of recent vintage they may already have 31 spline axles.

Correct. Just tore down a March 2005 axle assembly. 31 spline axles, 3:27 gear.... open differential.
Guess I'll have to not use the Eaton 28 spline diff I have and get a 31 spline now.

The Eaton Trutrac is hands down, the best differential for what you want. Any other choice is a lesser one, except for a Detroit Locker, which is probably only better for drag racing - (it's stronger, but not at all smooth)

I am biased by my personal experience of working on Fords for the last 46 years. I had a (9" version) Detroit Locker in my 1968 F100, and also have one in my current 1979 F150 4x4.
The 8.8 rear axle is a slight upgrade to the crappy and cheap GM design it copies.
I installed an Eaton Detroit Locker in my 2003 MM. It is noisy, clunks, bangs, and takes experience to get used to.
I have an 8.8" assembly with a Trutrac for my 2000 CVPI, which I have not installed yet. I went with the big 9" "Hobby Stock" ends (from Moser) on the housing, to get rid of the puny axle 8.8" ends and the bearings that ride on the axle shafts.
I wish I would have gone with the Trutrac for the MM, but at least I have the strongest differential available, and no clutches to wear out.

The trutrac is a decent carrier , but it's not very strong, and can only handle marginal horsepower and torque, it's ok for a dd , but I wouldn't use it in a car with any amount of decent power.

I had one before in a n/a car , very smooth, but the gears self destructed during a highway trip, they said i attempted to transfer too much power thru it , which was only around 375 at the wheels.
