    Parking E brake

So my parking brake has always allowed me to backup and pops up (off) when I put the car in drive. But my wife's Prius always stays in place when brake is on. Doesn't pop up. My question is, shouldn't I not be able to backup the car when the parking brake is on or should the parking brake pedal disengage automatically like when I put it in drive?

2003 had vacuum release parking brake. It is normal.

Thanks. I know the pop up is normal just like my 88 Crown Vic. But just thought my car shouldn't move with the parking break down and in reverse. My wife's Prius which apparently doesn't have the vacuum feature to pop up the parking brake pedal, will stay in place until the parking brake is disengaged when you try to drive the car backward or forward. Seems like a safer setup to me but maybe Ford has always considered if you put the car in gear, you intend to move and don't want the inconvenience of the lurch but not moving effect like my wife's car.

88LTD, I'm not quite sure what your question is. As others said above, the parking brake will automatically disengage when the shift lever is moved from P. If you hold your foot on the pedal, the brake should stay engaged and not allow the car to move, but the parking brakes in all Panther suck (a lot) and it's entirely likely yours is simply worn or out of adjustment.

I think I got my questions answered. If I put the car in gear, the parking brake will pop up (disengage).

But my wife's Prius seems like a more safe design. If I forget to manually take her brake off, then the car actually lurches and doesn't move. And you definately know the brake works.

My Marauder as far as I know you wouldn't know if your parking brake works or not because it auto disengages when the pedal pops up.

That's is considered a luxury feature. Manual release is not.
My 2010 MKS also has auto release. My 1999 Sable doesn't.

Probably why it was decontented in the '03 300b and all '04s.

Interestingly, my 2004 Grand Marquis Limited Edition has it...

Just seems odd to me that I can back all the way out of my driveway with the parking brake down, but then I put it in drive, it pops up and disengages. Seems like it should pop up when I put it in reverse same as in drive.

I'll have to check mine tomorrow. I rarely use the parking brake, except once in a while just to make sure it works.

They are designed to release in any forward gear. You need to either shift to D then to R or simply reach down and pull the lever.

I can only think of one reason why the parking brake would not auto-release in reverse...so you don't accidentally roll into something behind you you didn't or can't see. Seems like weak sauce, but I can't think of any other reason. It certainly would be more convenient if it did...

OK, so sounds like my car should not reverse when in reverse with the parking brake down. So I'll have a mechanic check my parking brakes.

You’re asking a lot out of those tiny shoes. It should hold the car in neutral, or even possibly in gear (somewhat), but definitely not while giving it gas.

OK, so sounds like mine are normal. My wife's Prius appears to have much stronger parking brake since it will not move in reverse when brake pedal is down. Or maybe my Marauder just has too much power for the parking brake compared to a prius? lol
