My ScanGauge II reads Trans temperature and seems to be accurate so where does it get the reading from??

Kind of off subject, but can anyone help me understand why those gauges are 2 different colors? Both have green covers over the bulbs. My only guess from really looking at them is the face of the top gauge isn't as close to the glass as the other. In which is letting more light from the rear come thru.
