When the 15 inch woofers in my home speakers cracked and wore out I made a plate to mount a 10 in its place. I then mounted a 2nd 10 in the rear. They hit harder and not as mushey.

It also depends on what the goal is. Some people want a more balanced sound. If you're not a bass lover, a 15 is overkill for the cabin of a car. If you love bass, 2 x 15s may not even be enough.

I would like to know the definition of "on top". You left out so many different variables in your reply above. Sealed vs ported are two different ballgames. You haven't even discussed enclosure design. No mention of power to said drivers, let alone proper electrical on the car to properly feed the amplifier(s). Then you have impedance the amp sees with box rise, etc. How about the type of vehicle said enclosure/drivers are in. Properly set amp gains and crossovers. What about the type of music. Is the listener more into sound quality or sound pressure level. The list goes on and on and on. With that said to the OP or anyone else the enclosure design is key. You can adjust the enclosure volume, shape, and port frequency (if applicable) to your driver, your car, power level, and your taste in music. In other words, don't skimp on your enclosure otherwise you will be disappointed no matter what brand of equipment you have. Do not let the driver size decide your fate. It is a non issue.
Not starting an argument Roger............
I just would love to put my 8's up against that slow moving 15 of yours.

I don't have a 15" , don't need that much bass in my old age! I think your going wayy off in left field though, I will probably do a single 12" or 10" sub personally, but once it's in place I'll make sure you get a listen, no stranger to car audio, lol.

Thumbs up man. We will agree to disagree since you know better and are no stranger to car audio. I will be out in left field if you need me, LOL.

The response or "sound quality" of a sub is directly related to the type of enclosure you have and also your definition of sound quality. Picking subs is like picking women, everybody has different tastes.
Sorry MOTOWN, but 8UWITH6 is correct. Way too many variables to justify such a broad statement.
My brothers American Bass 10" subs would blow the doors off one of my 15" CVX's in any type of driver competition. But his subs were also 700 bucks for the pair.
Hey everyone is entitled to their own opinion, i don't have a problem with that.
