I never liked giant subs. Sure, the impact is greater but SQ and efficiency nosedive. It takes a LOT of grunt to start/stop a 15" cone instantaneously and will cause lights to dim and electrical system woes trying to deliver all that amperage. I have three 10's in a tightly sealed enclosure with a 500/1 and I am more than happy with it being compact and delivers more bass than a majority of people need.

Personally I'm thinking of 2 JL Audio 10" W7 subs , or 1 12" on a 500/1 amp , but it definitely has to be a custom box on the rear deck in the trunk, not going to use my actual trunk space for subs.

I think we need an audio system pic thread. Share the ideas.

I agree with motown on not losing your trunk space.

So I built my own box, sealed, with internal chamber inside, to volume spec for 2 10" alpine Type Rs.. on spare tire deck.... Didn't like the sound. Seemed to be too close to the cabin, and was getting a flat not deep enough portion of the bass wave. Wonder if I should have ported the box? I have since removed because it took my spare space and creaked around back there above the spare tie down latch.

I can see maybe the drivers not making the sound you like. Every one is different. The enclosure needs to be built for the exact driver too for the same reason. Even two 10 inch subs from the same manufacturer can require different volume. Plus a sealed box is tighter and requires more power to drive, and typically doesn't go as low as a ported box. I prefer the tight hit you get with a sealed box to the mushy boom a sealed box gives. I can't see how being too close to the cabin can make a difference. Best sub I ever had was a JL Stealthbox in a center console.

You guys would not believe how much of a difference setting up your amplifier gains correctly makes. Steve Meade on youtube sells a DD-1 tool which I bought a few years back. I used to set gains by ear. Then I graduated to using a DVOM. Now I use the DD-1 and it was worth every penny. I don't damage my equipment and I can crank the volume with confidence knowing I am not sending a clipped signal to my junk. Look into it if you are truly a car audio enthusiast. I can bring mine with me to Louisville if needed.

Is this DD-1 something a typical stereo shop would have? I like to support local businesses whenever I can.

It's all JL Audio and Eclipse. There's a backup camera in the keyhole, DVD/Nav/iPod. The floor conceals the spare tire. it's lighted with LED's that are RGB for any and all color combinations.
