    Oh, No! Transmission Line Leak?

The garage floor has been totally dry, no signs of drips, leaks, etc. Until now.
Tonight I let Dawn use the MM to drive to a meeting at church, since her car is in the shop. After she left, I notice red fluid on the floor, not under the tranny, but under the area where the hood is when the car is parked. It wasn't in a little puddle, but kind of "sprayed" around. Could a tranny cooler line or something like that have sprung a leak, or maybe some connection come loose? If it did that up front, the fan could have sprayed the fluid around.
I'll have to look at it later tonight when she gets home.
    Any suggestions?

    Maybe power steering fluid?

Could be PS fluid. I hope it's in an obvious enough place that I can find it easily later tonight.

    You know Ross, how ironic....

I crawled under the front tonight to do an oil change and discovered what we in the military call a CLASS I leak coming from somewhere. It's not red though.

The front swaybar from the middle to the driver's side link was covered in oil residue. There was also a small amount of residue on the crank pully.

Very odd. Hope you find your leak....hope I find mine as well, cause I cannot figure where it could be coming from.

Check around the PS resvoir and see if the line connections are secure, also make sure the PS fluid level is good. If they are, then a check in with the local L/M dealer should net you a warranty replace. It sounds like this might be PS problem considering PS fluid has a red fluid appearence.

It's PS. Reservoir is low, and it looks like it's leaking from a fitting that comes out the bottom rear of the PS pump. Should hopefully only take a little tightening to fix (hopefully). Naturally, it's in a place where I can't possibly get a wrench on it. Guess I'll head to the dealer in the morning. Of course, my warranty expired a few days ago. Guess we'll see how the new extended warranty deals with me.

Just had my PS line from the pump to the rack replaced under warranty.
The techs said panther cars are notorious for that hose leaking.

Out of curiosity, what causes these leaks? Is it the line corroding and wearing, something coming loose, or something else?

When I took delivery of my car, brand new just off the car carrier, I had a bad o-ring in one of the power steering hose connections. Sprayed red steering fluid all over the front of my engine bay. Quickly repaired by my dealer, but what a mess.

    Variable Assist Solenoid

Another place that my 99 Crown Vic leaked was the power steering variable assist solenoid. I've replaced two of these, they last for about 60k miles, it wasn't leaking around the pipe fitting, it was actually through the solenoid assembly itself. I hope this issue has been fixed, I haven't seen any PS leaks so far in the Marauder.

    Got The Car Back

Took the car in this morning. Just got it back. The service advisor says that there was a leak (crack?) in the PS pump itself, so they replaced the pump. New Allstate extended warranty picked up the cost (minus my $50.00 deductible). On the way back to the office, I stopped at a car wash to spray off any residue fluid that had leaked in the engine compartment (being very careful to use low pressure and to stay away from anything electronic). I want to be able to see if there any more leaks, and not have any old fluid dripping to confuse the situation. Funny how they made that PS unit to last exactly 36K before it failed!

LOL, you'll find more things are "programmed" to go wrong right after the warranty is up. Always a good idea to go with Ford extended warranty. Glad you got the problem fixed.

Sorta sucks that the dealer didn't clean the car up for you. My Mercury dealership are kind of sucky sometimes, but every time they've done anything messy on/around my engine they clean up nicely. I'm sure that when they open the hood on my car and are blinded by all the shiny black plastic they realize that they better keep it clean or there's going to be hell to pay.
