    Smile The EGR valve

A week or so ago my car threw a P1406 code, EGR system related and I queried the internet for info in fixing the problem.

There is a wealth of information out there but all of it is for pre-2002 Ford products. Those vehicles have a two piece EGR system, an EGR valve and a DPFE (differential pressure feedback exhaust sensor)

Our cars 2003/04 Marauders and CV's GM's 2003 and up used a combined EGR assembly. The theory of operation and trouble codes are prolly the same.

The cost of the assembley is around $250 from FLM. Discounts may apply. Aftermarket stores may also carry the product but from reports I've seen they are more failure prone.

A big thanks to "Too Many Fords" AKA John of prorauder fame for straightening out this defugulity for me.

Changing the combined assembly fixed my problem and what went wrong on the old one was that a wire had broken off the relay termainal in the plastic DPFE portion. But it was impossible to "fish" out so..............time for a new one.

Tip on disassembly. Use a "break free" on the exhaust feed pipe and soak the threads for 15 minutes. Use an open end wrench and take care not to twist the pipe. The slightest leak will cause the car to throw a code.

My pipe jam nut came off easily. Also, do not take the piple out of the valve but move the valve from the pipe, that way there's no bending.

check the vacumn hoses for dry rot.

Total repair time, less than an hour.

The codes associated with this EGR system are P14XX.

Now, the EGR system is not so scary.

FYI there are a ton of good used EGR's floating around on this site for pennies on the dollar.

So Pat....when you threw the P1406 (EGR DFPS hose off Plugge) code...did you have a tune?
With that code I also threw a P1000 code...(Monitor check not comp)

(this is the explination I got from my XCAL-2)

I was hearing a noise while on throttle getting on the highway...like a pingpong ball rattling in a bottle. I was almost out of gas....went to fill up and took my tune out while at the gas station. I drove to discount tire to pick up my Suburban and when I started the Marauder I saw the check engine light on. Went to the bank and came home and checked the codes and cleared them....Did not hear the rattle after I took out the tune. I restarted the car after clearing the codes and didnt get another check engine light. Any ideas???

The tune is currently out and that is when the CEL comes on...I can clear the CEL and put the tune back in and not get a CEL....but the trans shifts are over revving....and with out the tune in it shifts fine and no drive issues...runs smooth. There is no more pingpong ball sound and the dealership said the EGR is bad and want to replace it for almost $500.00.

I am pretty sure I can replace the EGR myself...it sits right on top and the price for the EGR itself is $173.00. (yep...about $270.00 in labor)

I also spoke to Lidio to see if the EGR would cause some weird issue with the tune....he said no...but that my problem sounds real odd.

Tran shifts are over revving? Do you have any other tunes? You may want to install that tune and datalog with your xcal2 to see what is going on. Ask Lidio what he would want for pids and send the log to him. Or Dennis or whatever tuner you choose.

Well....since I was told the EGR is bad....and I told him that....he wants me to change out the EGR....drive it around a bit and then put back in the tune as soon as I turn the car off. So I will be doing that next week.

Man these last two weeks have been expensive for the Marauder..100K check up....all fluids changed or flushed, new windshield (today), new brakes, new diff cover, and got an oil leak fixed. And with a new EGR I will be upto about $1900.00

I know this is an old thread from 2008, however I am experiencing the same P1406 and P1000 codes with some rough idling. Did you end up replacing the EGR Valve to eliminate the codes and stop the rough idling? Thank you.

According to the OP, yes he replaced both the EGR & DPF.
