    Cool Ford Ecoboost Tuning Flexibility

Many here know I recently traded up from a 2006 Ford Ranger 4.0L to a 2019 Ranger Lariat Ecoboost. Impressed but expensive - insurance went up on Ranger $400 per year too!

Many here have Ford Ecoboost cars-trucks. Any tuning-service experiences, good or bad? Just curious. Some Impressive numbers coming from the new Ranger. Stock with 87 octane fuel and no mods: 243 RWHP and 267 Ft Lbs RWT. 93 octane fuel and no mods: 264 RWHP and 291 Ft. Lbs. RWT. Hennessy and others are reporting 300 RWHP and 375 Ft. Lbs. RWT with a 93 tune and free flow intake -exhaust mods.

Impressive. I'm using 90 E0 because it's readily available - 93 E0 is a bit more difficult to get but I only refuel my vehicles every 1-2 months. Ranger runs well on 90 - will try 93 to see for myself.

I follow 5 Star Tuning on Facebook and have used them with a prior car. They've been posting great results with tuning and supporting mods on the Ranger EcoBoost.

Hennessey is publishing 306 RWHP and 374 RHT with their tune and mods on 93 E10 fuel. Ford Factory warranty remains intact and the numbers are entirely believable. SPD performance is claiming 356 RWHP and 434 RWT with an E50 tune but similar mods as Hennessey otherwise. No word on the Ford Warranty.

Just a warning on Ford's warranty policies. If you tune one of these engines and it spits a con rod out the side of the block be prepared to pay for the repair if Ford finds out there is a tune in the ECU. We recently had an F150 in the shop with a K&N air filter that oiled the mass air flow sensor and the customer had to pay for the repair. He was not happy. Ford take a dim view on cranking up the boost via a tune.

Yeah--know a guy whose job it is to determine if you or Ford pays--but that's another story---just curious from your storyline if you have or are paying for your own warranty would it cover any problems that occur from you fooling around? hummm….Thanks.

I just returned an awesome rental ‘19 Expedition Max limited with the eco/10 and after 8xx miles and two weeks I can verify it is a complete turd.

Last summer I rented an ‘18 F150 Supercrew 5.0 for a week and I’m still smiling..

Maybe in a Ranger, but I feel that engine has no place in full size.

But I will cave and admit I enjoyed the fuel mileage on the Expy.

    That's one heck of a jump from a 2006 Ranger to a 2019...
When I saw my first 2019 "Ranger" I thought it was an F-150 or even a SuperDuty at first. Those new Rangers are huge!

Recently, I drove over to the Ford dealership and parked my 2004 Ranger alongside of their new model...

And the Ranger (4WD Crew Cab Lariat FX4, etc.) in the dealer's showroom had a sticker price of 4 times what I paid for mine when it was new. Granter, we're not exactly talking comparable vehicles, but fourple the Monroney is a stiff jump.

That said, that new Ranger is a heck of a lot of truck...

Turd? I haven’t tried the new platform, but our 6200 lb ‘16 Navi L 4wd would give a stock Marauder a good run. I was only inclined to tune it unti I drove it... can’t imagine they’ve gone that far backwards.

You are comparing it to 16 year old tech. I was comparing similar platforms. With the 5.0 available on the F150 I don’t understand why they wouldn’t offer it in the heavier Expy.

For a list price of $76,000 it certainly wasn’t to keep costs low for the consumer.

The 3.5 EcoBoost (even the non-Raptor version) offers a whale of a lot more torque, and at a lower RPM than the Coyote; it's a better fit for the Expedition and Navigator.
There are a lot of pickup truck guys who demand the Coyote 5.0 just because it's a V-8, and it's a little less costly than the 3.5 EcoBoost... but mostly, the F-150 guys like hearing that V-8 exhaust rumble.

I'm planning on buying a 2020 Ranger sometime next year.
My 1999 Ranger has 300,000+ miles on it and I'm about to swap in a 92,000 mile junkyard 3.sl0w to keep it running until the new Ranger purchase.
I want to get the '1st year' problems corrected by FORD on the new Ranger and allow the 1st year demand to die down so that they will discount/deal on it.
Looking forward to the torquey turbo 2.3L EcoBoost w/10 speed combo vs. my 3.sl0w 4 speed.
I have to say, I LOVE EcoBoost/turbo cars!
When I lean on the Fusion Sport's throttle, it just MOVES! ....effortlessly vs. my Marauder which always had to downshift and run a lot of revs to move out.
(Although the Marauder sounded SO MUCH better!)

Keep in mind the current Ranger was released to overseas markets for the 2015 model year and received major updates to coincide with its North American release this year.
