    Tesla Burns Man Alive?

Tesla’s Futuristic Door Handles Blamed for Death in Crash
    By Robert Burnson | October 23, 2019

The futuristic door handles on Tesla Inc.’s Model S are being blamed for a fatal crash in which a police officer was unable to pull a man to safety from his burning car.

Omar Awan, a 48-year-old anesthesiologist, was driving his leased Tesla in February when he lost control on a south Florida parkway and the car slammed into a palm tree, according to a wrongful death lawsuit filed in state court in Broward County.

A police officer couldn’t open the doors because the handles were retracted and bystanders watched helplessly as the car filled with smoke and flames, according to the complaint, which alleges the fire originated with the car’s battery.

The door handles on the Model S are flush with the car and pop out — “auto-present” in the words of Tesla — when they detect that the key fob is nearby.

“Fire engulfed the car and burned Dr. Awan beyond recognition — all because the Model S has inaccessible door handles, no other way to open the doors, and an unreasonably dangerous fire risk,” according to the Oct. 10 suit. The complaint lists the cause of death as smoke inhalation and states that Awan had sustained no internal injuries or broken bones in the crash.

Tesla didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Consumer Reports said in 2015 that broken door handles were one of the most common problems with the Model S.

Awan’s Tesla continued to burn for hours, reigniting several times even after firefighters had extinguished the flames and the car had been towed, according to the complaint.

This isn’t the only case to fault the Model S’s lithium-ion batteries as flammable. The family of an 18-year-old who lost control of his Tesla at 116 miles per hour and crashed into a concrete wall last year blames an explosion of the battery for his death in an “entirely survivable” crash, according to a suit filed this month in state court in San Jose, California.

Awan’s case is Awan v. Tesla Inc., 19-021110, Circuit Court of Broward County, Florida.

Time for a well-handled firearm to do its' work at the very least...since cops don't carry billy clubs...BUT that's a VERY stressful situation!

    Ya, THINK!!!

If he were my family, I'd sue the idiot cop for failing to act!

If he had time to "pull the guy out thru door if only it would open", = even faster to pop the window and pull him out!

Door glass is ridiculously easy to pop.

    What a tragedy...

I can’t say the cop was an idiot, but, one would think breaking the glass would be a viable option, worst case, shoot it, just try not to hit the crash victim.

A lot of new cars have laminated safety glass in the doors now. This would make it very difficult to break and remove to extract the victim. I’m unsure if Tesla’s have this but my guess is they might. Obviously Tesla needs some fail safe in the door handles.

This guy should know... I have witnessed him throwing a truck bottle jack at a rear Ford Explorer glass window...
i think the 10th time it finally shattered and he was sweating afterwards

I hope the family receives everything they are suing for, just like the family that drowned in 4 feet of water

Life Hammer. Everyone should carry one in their car. Cheap insurance. $7.00 to $9.00. Although they don't usually work on back or front windshields, they are very effective on the tempered side glass. May not work as well on laminated glass. But the LEO should have used with his service weapon and shot the glass if a baton or a hammer-type tool was not available.

He must have panicked too since he forgot that he can at least break a window to pull the man out.

Having worked collisions on the law enforcement side I can 100% assure you that no police officer has ever left a victim in a car because of inaccessible door handles. Something else was going on, either this car was completely engulfed by the time someone was on scene or the driver was deceased upon the officer's arrival. I kept a glass punch in my patrol bag up front along with a seatbelt cutter. Most guys kept/keep that stuff easily accessible just for these situations. Even still, the fire department keeps plenty of extraction equipment and if they couldn't access the victim then again I am led to believe he was deceased upon arrival of emergency workers.

Lastly, the Supreme Court opined that police officers and municipalities cannot be held liable for loss of life. See Castle Rock v. Gonzales.

Question? If you are in a car that is on fire would you rather be in a car that the door can be opened by using the handle?

Even if the handles were out unless it was unlocked it wouldn't have done any good. Not impressed with these "glorified gulf carts"...
