Thermostat not in the Car, New One Installed, Car Overheats

My mechanic informed me that when they were replacing the radiator, that there was no thermostat and apparently I've been driving without one for a while. I just don't know if any former mechanic took it out and failed to replace it. Therefore, the car is overheating with a new radiator and thermostat. Any one out there know why? They are testing the water pump etc. Thanks and happy new year.

You have to burp the system of air. There is specific steps for it. You have an air pocket and coolant won't flow.

Thermostat not in the Car, New One Installed, Car Overheats

The stat needs to be for a Marauder. Most every auto part store will sell you one for a Grand Marquis and they will not work, it’s what their computer shows. Make sure that they actually installed the correct one and that they properly burped the cooling system of air. These engines are picky and it’s quite normal for an overheat after the system is opened and not burped right.

Someone here will have the correct part number.

Not knowing the mechanic makes it hard to trust that there wasn’t one previously installed. Just sayin it’s a good excuse to sell you on other items if it didn’t overheat before but does now. When’s the last time it was touched? You probably had zero heat if this was true.

If everything is how they say (with the proper stat and burped correctly) I’d be looking to do a block drain flush before a pump. Sounds like a blockage somewhere. I’ve personally never seen a pump fail to spin without having a blown bearing. It would also normally be leaking out the vent hole.

What was the condition of the old coolant?

Thank you all for this information. I'll double check with parts.

Just called the shop and they use the thermostat by cross referencing it with the VIN and they use OEM parts.

Ford isn’t much better! Seriously go see the Ford counters fiche for a few parts and you’ll see a 2V 4.6. The two I remember for sure is cross over tube O rings and coolant temp sensor both were wrong obviously. I can’t make this up. Have them cross it to the Napa one listed above for safe measure. Then make sure it isn’t oriented wrong. (Another common booboo especially if there wasn’t one installed prior to compare to)
