Thread: Transmission Fluid Exchange.

    Transmission Fluid Exchange.

Normally, whenever I see an add for a Transmission Flush, I ask them what do they use for Fluid, seeing as I have a Ford product. Normally, they answer with "Dexron III/Mercon. When I tell them that my Fords call for Mercon-V, almost always answer with "we never had any problems using Dexron/Mercon". I've even told them that my Owners Manual tells me "Do Not Use Mercon, only
Mercon-V". Don't matter to these guys. (What the heck, it's not their car).

Well, I saw an add in my local paper from GoodYear. Part of the add goes like this:
    $89.99 Transmission Fluid Exchange
We replace all transmission fluid including fluid in the Torque converter, Transmission cooler and all transmission lines. Fill with OEM approved transmission fluid.

Well, I went to their Leesburg (FL) store and talked with their Service Manager. He said that yes, they use DexronIII/Mercon, however for Ford products they include an additive that converts the Mercon to Mercon-V specs. I asked him to show me the additive. He went and pulled out a bottle of additive (forgot the brand name) that states on the bottle that it turns Mercon to Mercon-V specs and no Torque Converter Shudder. (He also showed me a bottle, same brand name, that converts Dexron/Mercon to Chryslers ATF-3 [not ATF-4] specs.)

Never knew they had such a thing. One of these days, I will have my MM flushed out.

Be careful, be very careful. See other posts about the same additive. I'd buy the correct fluid for them to use after the flush.

Don't even think about it! you'll be sorry if you do. forget the low price they've quoted you, and just have it flushed and filled at the dealer. It only costs $150,and how often are you going to need to do that? it's worth every penny to have it done right at your dealer with the correct fluid.

if you think I'm overstating things here, then just click on the link below where you'll find another recent thread started by another board member here who made the mistake that you're about to make. The very least that you should do is read post #21 by "Meninblk" in that thread!!!

OK guys, you are right. I thought about it and that's it. I thought about it. I will get it done at my Ford dealer.

No, it doesn't. DexIII/Mercon is a dino-based oil and Mercon V is a synthetic blend. Simply adding a bottle of some miracle glop will not convert a dino oil to a synth blend.

Ditto! I've seen to many trans screwed up using the wrong fluid...it will
change the shift characteristics and within weeks can be detrimental..

Cost me $250 for 5 gallons of Max ATF and $100 to have it done, but I went Royal Purple sysnthetic. My Corvette is a 6sp manual or I'd do it to it too. Never put anything but Royal Purple in any of my cars. It's about $7/quart, but it makes me feel like I'm protecting my investments.

Hey, Don...where the heck have you been? Long time no see...

I'm a little curious about that "scott03vic" and his problem. He states that the infamous shudder keeps returning every few thousand miles...that sounds like he has something very wrong with his trans or T/C...or that he's REALLY hard on his car...
