Thread: Power steering causes engine to rev?

Power steering causes engine to rev?

This might be the stupidest question yet on this form but I’m asking anyway.

I just noticed yesterday that my engine seems to rev if I turn the steering wheel while the car is in park. I cannot really explain exactly what is going on just that if I turn on the car, leave it in park, and turn the steering wheel either to the right or to the left it sounds like I’m tapping on the gas pedal.

Yeap, mine does. It takes a little more muscle to run the power steering, so I'm guessing that it revs up just a tad to compensate.

Doesn't our MM's have variable speed-assist steering? The faster you go the less power-assist you get to steer?

It will do it in gear as well. I discovered it a while back too. I'll sit at a light and drive my wife nuts by just slightly turning the steering wheel every few seconds. She can't stand it.

Ahhh. Olekids 59 and prolly knows her pretty good. Might be one of those that needs to have something to be mad about, makes for better sex.

I like to do the one about stopping when they have a cup of coffee or something they're trying to drink. Slow to a crawl, wait for them to lift the cup to their mouth and then, WHAM!

    That one's my favorite.

She doesn't really get mad, she just doesn't know why I never grew up.

That sounds normal, oldekid. My wife has been waiting for 42 years. She is the most stubborn person I know. She is still waiting, expecting...fruitlessly. Dennis and oh, yes, every power steering car I can remember owning has reved to compensate for load at idle.

Guys, thanks for all the input. I wasn't even sure that I should post such a question. Now that I have read all of the comments (like the one above) I am really glad that I did.

This site is so informative and at times too funny!

Again, thanks for the info/ laughs.

There's a pressure switch on the power steering system (pump?) that triggers the PCM to raise the idle when there is a greater load on the engine at idle. P*ss poor system, if you ask me, and it can be downright hairy trying to fit my Marauder into a parking space in my garage between two large cement pillars when the aisle itself is only 1.5 car Marauder-widths wide.

I've moaned and groaned about this system here just recently...

Yeah, I have noticed it also. Takes a long while to get the hang of parking in tight quarters without driving over curbs and pedestrians.

You can compensate for this in tuning your chip, Lidio practically removed all traces of the engine rev associated with the steering.
