They're just a little too flashy for me. How do you take them off of the back bumper safely?

You might try using 20 lb fishing line to separate the letters from the mounting tape, but I'll probably be slow going. Just stay off the paint when moving the line back and forth. Then you'll have to deal with getting the tape off.
Since the letters are recessed on the bumper fascia it's going to be a job, but I imagine it can be done with enough persistence. I removed my trunk badge and fender badges without too much problem with the fishing line.
Currently Marauderless but looking
It's not easy to fish the line into the recessed inserts. Use a tubular instrument (syringe? straw?) to soak the stickerbacks with denatured alcohol to soften the glue. Then, after a good soak (maybe 1-2 minutes) re-wet it and use the line at the top of each letter and pull toward you. You may need to add more alcohol. A helper would be good to add alky while you work the letter.
Alky/glue residue will run down your bumper. Use alky to clean up the inlay area. Finally wet a clean terry towel with alky and wipe down the area, turning often to remove all residue.
Denatured alcohol will not hurt the paint but WILL remove all wax. Alchohol is NOT reactive with clear-coat.
RE-wax. Twice.

Try a heat gun or blow dryer, heat one letter at a time, pri off carefully.
How about applying new inserts over top that are not so flashy?
Mine are gray on my SB, definitely understated but still noiceable.
There used to be a vendor on ebay that had a wide variety of colors available.
Seems to me that would be easier than trying to remove out of that recessed area.

I agree a heat gun or a hair dryer should loosen the adhesive.

Your screwed up bumper is going to look more flashy than the inserts when you pry them off I'll give a secret though...
Soak each letter in a bath of goo-gone; just pour it over and let it site like 15minutes to a half hour. Then get out the hair dryers and start to take them off with some floss.
Ignorance is Bliss. I hope you're enjoying it.
