Unhappy My Speedometer Doesn't Work Anymore

I have an 03 with just over 19K, and about two weeks ago my speedometer started going crazy . Sometimes it just rests at zero while im driving, sometimes it bounces around, and sometimes it works. If I turn my stereo up so that my bass is up it will bounce up and down according to the beat. Has anyone heard this?

    Dealer issue!

Sounds like a bad speedo gear - if we still use them, that is.

My neighbor had an F-150 that he found he could stop the ODO by fiddling with the "Trip Reset" buttom...Weird thing was the ODO quit but the Speedo kept working!!??

Needless to say it stayed broken a long time but he finally had it fixed by the dealer and I think they read the EEC and found the correct mileage and put a plate on the door jam stating the mileage differential!!

Pull the fuse for the instrument cluster. I accidentally blew mine when I was troubleshooting my Autometer gauges (ended up being a faulty gauge; as for blowing the fuse, don't ask, it's a long story). Anyway, if you do this you lose ALL instrumentation, (yes, even the odometer) as well as automatic headlights and rear defroster. I didn't even realize I had blown the fuse until I was driving and noticed I was doing 0 mph at 0 rpm.....yeah, that was fun....I'm done, carry on.

If it's the speed sensor the odometer and the speedometer would both quit working. If it's only the speedometer going nuts, then the instrument cluster will have to be repaired.

SS can be got and replaced easy as pie. Last item dealer only recommended.

The dash is entirely electronic, including the speedo. The speedo is a sealed unit with internal servos that control the speedo and odo. If yours is flaky, you may have a short in the wiring harness prior to the speedo.

I've been all over the EEC, never saw a long term permanent mileage file. The EEC will store up to 300 hours of driving data, which will include miles driven, but it overwrites itself in 300 hours.

If you want to pause your mileage, find the correct wire in the harness and put a switch on it.
