    O/D Light Flashes

OK, I searched this topic a bit last night but didnt see too much in the way of definitive answers. I saw a cupl folks had the same symptoms as mine but no real closure as to why.

Running around the back roads this weekend I experimented with manually shifting from 2nd to 3rd and back. Nothing extreme I just wanted to see how the car felt...(marginally better) Anyway, on Saturday night the light started flashing after I entered a 45 mph roadway and clicked the OD back to normal OD operation. The trans did not upshift as usual, after a few clicks of the O/D button, then slipping her back in to neutral (coasting) and then back to drive it upshifted. The light did not flash any more that night.

Sunday I drove about 200 miles on mixed backroads with very little manual shifting. The light started flashing about a block from home and would not go out until I shut down and restarted.

    Any ideas?

Did you happen to get a tune for your car or is it bone stock?? I had my O/D light flash after a tune and it was due to the shift pressures being too high.
If its bone stock then you may want to head over to the dealer, the O/D light is a Check engine light for your tranny.
You may have a bad speed sensor or something minor like that.

The only time Ive had the green blinking light of death is when I was sitting on the coverter too long at the track and overheated it. Let it cool down and it was gravey.

Manually shifting in and out of 2nd will fry the OD band very quickly.
    I suggest you stop.

OD band is for forth gear is it not? how does going from 2nd to 3rd (both real gears) fry the band?

Why do you say? When this was being done the O/D was off so I wasnt going 4..2...back to 3 then in to OD. Just sliding out of 3rd at 35-40 MPH heading in to turns and holding second a bit longer in the twisties, upshifting around 4k on the way out....

I dont think manually shifting will become a habit anyway, just curious why this would fry the OD band. (I know my way around cars pretty good but I lack any knowledge of auto trans internals)

I have an AOD-E in my truck...it has 161,000 miles on it with no problems at all...knock wood. I remember when I bought it, new in 94, I was a bit disapointed I didnt get the " new" 4RW trans...after driving this for 1000 miles I am glad I didnt. Just drove that truck today, nice firm upshifts at the right time...never hits OD until above 40, and doesnt really mind doing 70 in third

Based on what I have read I don't think this car has had a tune, I'll be calling DR shortly...the car goes back to the dealer for some items before the FOMOCO warranty runs out...this is on the list.

Keep the info coming, thanks guys.

OK...so second gear is applied differently based on lever position and OD position?

When the lever is moved to second the OD band is utilized, but when in D with OD in operation the band does not come in to play until 4th engages? Does anyone know why?

What about when OD is off but the trans shifts automatically from 1 thru 3...is the band still utilized?

Again...I'm clueless about AT internal operation, hopefully I wont be much longer LOL
