It's a Chevy II, right? The "Nova" is a trim package, or, it was back then. Just like the Biscaynes, Belairs and Impalas.
Begining in 1961 for the 1962 model year, three different trim levels for this car were offered. The Chevy II 100, the Chevy II 300 and the Chevy II 400 Nova.
These cars were available as a 2-door coupe, a 2-door sedan, a 4-door sedan, a 2-seat station wagon, a 3-seat station wagon and finally, a convertible.
As it's been noted, the Nova SS trim package came out in 1963, and I believe in 1968, Chevrolet dropped the "Chevy II" handle completely, and called it Nova.
EDIT: Just noticed the V8 badging on the lower fenders, a V8 option from the production line wasn't available until 1964, though a dealer could upgrade a post production car in 1963.
OTOH, that was a long time ago...I was just 12...But, my father had one as a service car, and I that's where I began paying attention to cars.

Actually, this may happen fairly soon. Our guru of gears, Scott Levine, has given his blessing to perform some mod work on the SSR, and I'm thinking of him putting on Hotchkis front and rear sway bars. Also, I need the Toddster to put on a Magnaflow kit for this truck as well, though I'm debating getting Kooks long tube headers.
I was going to head up to Detroit for WDC and a SSR owners event in Lansing the Sunday afterward, but maybe I'll spend the money on mods.

But, I've got to admit....it was REALLY clean...already could have been considered "molested" by any "purists" by having the small-block V8 installed...but, if it were mine...I'd probably have the Nova SS badging on it as well. Even though the early "SS models" might not have deserved the "Super Sport" monicker...later on in the '60s it DID mean something as to more performance.
I'm not up on Chevy rear ends, but that looked like a Ford 9" in there... ??

Those models used a "Chunk" type rear end from General Motors. Rear end was changeable just like Ford, pull axles, drop driveshaft, and pull out Chunk.
It was very easy to change, I had 3.08, 3.55, and 4.10 for a 62 & 64 Chevy and changed out in garage as needed.
