    Cylinder Head Temp Gauge

I just got this feature working on my ScanGauge yesterday.

My question is, does it exist, where is it and can you prove its really on the car?

Seems to me it must be incorporated into one of the sensors in the coolant crossover tube, which is pointless since it wll always read the same as the water temp.

FYI, the CHT and ECT are always withn 2-3 degrees of each other.

I looked for a threaded CHT port when I was installing all my gauges and never found it.

I ended up adding a sensor in an unused threaded port that is in the 'lifter valley' under the intake manifold.
It is essentially reading the block temperature.
Now I have both the Autometer temperature gauge and the OEM gauge working.

Zack....I can't tell you exactly where they're located in the heads, but the sensors are there, screwed into the heads. They are the only initial link that keeps you from melting down the motor in case of coolant loss by shutting down cylinders. During a a catastophic loss of coolant, or a stuck thermostat, the ECT sensor is not quick enough to determine that there is a problem. During normal operation, the 2-3 degree delta is normal, as one would expect, since coolant is properly flowing.

BTW, if you really want to see something neat with the ScanGage2 tool, set it up for HP. Don't forget, it displays gross hp, not net. So far, the best I've been able to observe is 345 hp. Unfortunately, it's tough to observe the gauge while doing a WOT start, as well as the fact that the meter only updates, at best, once a second, so you will miss the peaks.

My CHT reads a couple of degrees higher than water and I cannot make it spike up with hard running!!

Beats me where the sensor is but I guess if you ran HOT the CHT would go wild??

I would love to believe that, cause Ive had MANY Mod heads stripped down to bare aluminum and never saw them.

Again, can someone PROVE they exist?

I will consult with my resident expert from the CVN forum, JohnG. We just talked about them last night, ironically enough, but I wasn't awake enough to remember to ask where they were located.

While I wait, if someone has a service manual handy, they could find them just as quickly. I'm at work at the moment so I can't get to my books.

I have totally disassembled my motor a couple of times, don't recall any CHT sensors. Only one sensor I haven't bothered to identify, one on each side, attaches to the valve cover near the top rear bolt on the driver's side and closer to the center on the passenger's side. What are those sensors?
Thanks to Darrin @ BC Automotive:

I dont think they are sensors.
They remind me of condensors for the ignition coils.

Allright! I haven't done anything to my car except for a tune, t'stat, and plugs. I guess in theory, I should be seeing more, but yours sounds like a good start.

BTW, what have you done to your car?

I don't quit so easily. I checked with my source from CVN as well as a Ford mechanic friend. Both of them say there is one sensor (and one sensor only) for CHT. It is located just under the intake manifold, near the front, by cylinder #5 (driver side). Not viewable on 4V motor when looking at the engine compartment, although it can be seen on the 2V motor.
