How to determing if its the AC Blower or AC speed control?

    Hey fellas,

I did a search and found many post on this but, I am trying to determine which part to purchase to solve my problem?

Common threads say replace AC Blower or AC speed control?

My heat/AC isnt blowing anything? When set on heat I can feel heat (barely) and can switch from DEF/VENT/FLOOR and seems to be functioning fine. I also hear the compressor kick on when turning the H/AC on.

    Dealer quoted:
    AC Blower is $340
    AC Speed control $140

Final question are these parts difficult to install?

Unplug the blower motor.....passenger side under hood.....with jumpers connect it directly to the battery (doesn't matter about polarity as it will run both ways)!! If it runs (full speed) it is the control module which lives in the plenum right behind the passenger side valve cover.

Sometimes you can smack the control module with a screw driver and it will work again??

If you need the control module they are only $30.00 or so and FWIW Ford has had a lot of them go bad!!

I can send you photos and help you with the R & R if you elect do it yourself!!

    Good Luck!!

Could it be the Blower Motor resistor? (I think that is what it is called) My girlfriends taurus has the same problem and I was told the blower motor resistor... I dunno... just throwing it out there

It is the "Blower Control Module"...attached is a photo!!

The part with the cooling fins is inside the blower plenum and.....YES, it is a bit of a PITA to remove and replace but you can do it without removing the valve cover!!!

There is no resistor in the Marauder. That's only for cars with 3-speed (OFF-LO-MED-HI) heater fans. The Marauder heater uses PWM (pulse-width modulation) for infinitely-variable fan speed and has a separate PWM controller module.

Meanwhile my 98 P74 has never needed this part replaced. Something tells me they are cheapening parts.

    Cool

I did the "hit - it " test on the blower, then did the direct hookup...it works so its the B C M ...

Now, I spent 30 minutes looking for its location and I must be a moron...no findit ! Any guidance and instruction accepted ! Oh, and I do have the D R cooling mod back there too...

Maybe a sticky for this for future generations to refer too ?

    Great thing...this internet biz

Although the postings on this thread are over a year old they still saved me the headache of dealing with service repairs and money.

Since I live in San Diego I could not tell you the last time I used the heating/AC in my car, but I went to turn it on this morning to clear a fogged up windshield (I was awake earlier than I normally am) and I got nothing. Much like others have discribed, I was able to hear the williness of the system wanting to switch between whatever setting I put it at (Vent, AC, Floor) and was able to hear the AC compressor kick in, but no fan.

Oddly, I read this thread, went down with a pair of needle nose (thinking I might need to pull a fuse and check) and smacked the blower motor that is under the hood on a passengers side - it fired right up.

M-jack, I'd buy you a beer or two or three for that lil tid bit of info...saved me greatly!

    Thanks

    Glad I could help you!!

My service manager said an elderly couple from Florida came in a few years back in a MGM with the BCM symptoms but he didn't have one in stock so he smacked it with a screw driver and the blower began to work!!! They stopped in a year later and it was still working OK??

I have heard you can remove the large transistor and re-coat the base with heat transfer gunk and it will be OK......for me a new piece was in order since it is a PITA to R & R!!!!
