GEM module ?

This part seems to control reverse lights,auto height control,HVAC,auto rearview mirror and foglights ... dunno what else. I have been informed that this item has a reputation for going out BUT doesnt need to be replaced ... just reprogrammed/reflashed. I want to know where its located and what would be a sensible logical and honest price to just "respark" it ....

These items have been out of commission on RoadPig One for .. ohh ... a really long time and sparked my removal of the height control sensor and completing the DYI manual control. It has taken all this time to narrow down the possible module. Obviously, if the dealers let this nugget out, they would lose money by doing a simple reflash versus replacing the part as a whole. Thats what is the drive behind this...

Can't find the GEM in the 2004 Workshop Manual. Searching on the internet is could be mounted in a bunch of different places, behind the radio, under the dash, on top of the fuse box, under the hood, etc. Also saw one post that said the code had to be downloaded to a Ford scan tool the uploaded to the new module.

I'll check the 2004 & 2003 Electrical Manual.

EDIT : Hopefully I can put my mitts on this unit unless its combined with something else ( think of our infamous LCM ) yank it and then hopefully bench flash it...

I believe the one you'all looking for is under the dash just in front and above the obd 2 plug.

Um, I did not see any evidence of that module on my 04 interior harness. The closest thing to it was the module located in the HVAC assembly, but I thought that was for the air ride..

Controlling reverse lights and all that, isnt that the job for the LCM?

I could tell you really any plugs that are missing a module, and the only plugs that I remember when I installed the harness was for that module I spoke about above, plugs for the clock (there was another plug, not to sure what is was for though) ... nothing else really out of the ordinary..

Guess I will find out this weekend when the motor goes in if non of that stuff works.

I did some googling as well, it looks like this guy keeps coming up for F-150s, Taurus, etc. Me thinks its the LCM.

Panthers do NOT use a GEM. As jackiet suggested, on 1995+ models the LCM or lighting control module takes care of the lighting systems and only lighting with only a few exceptions (ie seatbelt lamp -00, panic alarm, door and trunk ajar warnings, warning tone for digi dash, anti-theft for TC, etc.)

Reverse lamps and the brake lamp circuit does not pass through the LCM, however.

The LCM is close to where 3.8 said, it's basically right over your accelerator pedal. Turn your hazard lamps on and follow the clicking noise, it leads you right to the LCM (sound insulator panel on equipped models needs to be pulled down)

The other functions you have listed are controlled by their own independant modules, like the EATC for hvac controls (which is a hybrid electric and vacuum controlled system, the air outlets for instance are all vacuum motor controlled), and the RAS/EVO (more recently known as VAPS) module for the height sensor / load-leveling rear air suspension.

The auto-dim mirror just has switched power and constant ground to it, completely independent (also has a reverse light input to kill dimming when backing up)




The LCM on most recent models is reprogrammable, but only for very limited functions (ie autolamps, DRL)
This is done with Ford IDS over the module communication network using the OBDII datalink connector

Hmm okay Drock but here are slight variables... These items all went south at the same time ... not one then another, etc. I replaced the LCM a long time ago with two known good LCM's ( I have more than one MM ) and the problems still existed with them both. All fuses,relays tested satisfactory both under load and not ... so now I am at a loss ... or I have confused myself so thoroughly I dont see the forest for the trees ...

Well, the reverse lights have their own harness that runs up and connects to the dash harness - everything you are listing actually is connected to the dash harness, besides the auto review mirror - that connects to the harness for your OHC and that harness runs to the back right side of your car, coming down the rear pillar and connected to a plug near your rear seats. That plug, is connected to your interior harness.

Sounds like you might have a wiring failure?

Can you list which parts are not working or what are they doing?

reverse lights
ride height - did the DIY trick to fix this
rearview mirror
compass/temperature
HVAC
brake+gas pedal - plastic gear may be broken
foglights

Wow, that is defiantly a list of items that don't really connect to eachother besides of two things:

Reverse lights and ride height (I believe ride height I did not install this in my car) run to the trunk via its own harness that plugs into the harness where the dash harness and interior harness meet up (near the fuse box).

Rearview mirror, compass/temperature all connect to the top harness above your headliner, which runs to the back of the car and then connects to the interior harness. HVAC connects to the dash harness, and fogs obviously to the engine bay harness. But the fogs not working could be contributed to the dash harness as they run from the switch inside to the LCM (I believe).

Sounds like what you are looking at is either fuses (maybe, but first thing to check) or your harnesses have started to short out.

Have you ever had any type of burning plastic smell in the car, or have any interior water damage?
