Replacing fuel filter - How to deal with these clips?

I Googled, I searched these forums, I even bought a Chilton's :-) - This is my first post. I've been a marauder owner for a week now!

The clips on my fuel filter are unlike what I've read about anywhere. The piece that goes onto the filter ends is hard plastic. The clip is a not-as-hard plastic "C". I can see the ends of the C through 2 small holes. The outer part of the C is in a recess so I couldn't get a screwdriver under it. I push up on of the C-ends and it went up easily. And broke. I couldn't get the other half pushed up so I stopped right there. If I were to get it out, is the broken clip OK to put back in? The replacement filter(Motorcraft FG986B) doesn't have clips so I suppose I'd have to go to a dealer.

I attached a picture of the clip (2/3s of it anyways). Any advice?(always a loaded question :-)

After I broke a bunch of them I found out that you PUSH the flat part IN to disengage the clips.....pull the connector off the filter while pushing in on the clip ....DO NOT REMOVE THEM......DUH!!!

Like I said I broke a BUNCH of them!!

But a broken clip WILL hold the assembly together with alittle duct tape until you get a new one....believe me

I just went through this not to long ago and of course broke one of the clips (learning removal). Since didn't come with correct clip just reused broken clip, but used a hose clamp to hold in place on both ends of filter.

You "feel" the difference because you want to "feel" the difference. Since you just spent money on the upgrade you "have" to feel the difference

I'm looking to eliminate the double pump process I have to follow right now to get the pedal hard

    Awesome thread there.

I have spares at home now and carry two in my travel kit.

MJ- EXCELLENT post. I did not know that you could push them in, pull the connector and leave the clips alone!

I laughed and laughed! No tools required! I just pushed with my thumb/forefinger and it came right off. There I was before with pliers, screwdrivers, a Dremel (jk) Pulling, twisting. I am really glad I asked...

Getting ready to change the filter - is it really necessary to relieve the fuel pressure before disengaging the clips ? I don't care about a little fuel spray (no flames or sources of heat nearby) and I figure I'll have rags and drip pan at the ready.
