You may have air trapped in the cooling system.
The rigid tube that crosses the top front of the motor has a cap on it.
When the engine has cooled down remove the cap with a 1/4" socket drive and add coolant there.
Run the engine with a funnel in the cross over tube fill hole.
As the air is released, you will keep adding coolant 50/50 till no more air bubbles surface.
This may take several minutes and make sure you are on level ground or the front is higher than the rear of the car.

Check for air, but it sounds more like a thermostat. Can you feel the hoses around it? Are they full?

It seems like the thermo may be stuck closed. Do you have heat?

I wouldn't worry about the heads yet. Our cars are more prone to leak through the oil filter adapter then a head gasket. Check your oil and water for intrusion of one or the other, replace your thermostat and make sure you vent everything well through the crossover tube. Put the correct antifreeze and percentage in.
Test the new thermo in a pan of water before you put it in. I have found significant variances in "new" thermo's.

Another thing...you really shouldn't let any car warm up by idling unattended for an hour...I don't care HOW cold it is outside.

^^ What he said, especially when the car warms up in like 10 mins anyway.

I don't know don't be to confident on that, my car has 42k miles it probably had bout 36k when I had it warming up at idle and the head gasket blew, so, u should chek that out, and especially if u said ur car sounds like it's a diesel when u turn it on

i changed the thermostat and added more antifreeze but the car is still running hot. i felt the hose and it felt like it was full, tight. it look like it was expanding, is it air still trapped in the cooling system?

after you put the t-stat in let it warm up and cool back down a few times. with the front end up, open the plug on the crossover pipe after it has cooled down once again. The antifreez should fill up to the very top of the plug if the air escaped correctly.

The radiator might be dirty. Used to happen to me until I powerwashed it at a coin car wash. Give it a try.
