Mounting the Dreaded Front License Plate Mount and SB Paint in Spray Can?

    Hi -

I live in NJ and bought my MM from PA.

So, I have to drill into this perfect front bumper or find other alternatives.

I know about the retracting/vacuum assisted mounts but I don't think that they'll work on the MM as they are too low.

I've been thinking about velcro-ing the stock Mercury mount to the front bumper (may lose some paint but at least no holes).

Does anyone have any successful mods that I could try?

I searched for previous threads but couldn't find any.

Also, is there a manufacturer of Silver Birch paint that comes in a spray can? I'd like to color match the mount to the bumper.... Got to keep it real.

    Thanks all!

    Mark

Do the thing that uses angle brackets to bolt to the underside of the opening.
Don't use the front factory bracket. It's huge and looks like ass.

Yes but isn't that too low?

Do you (or anyone else) have pictures?

    Thanks,

When I bought my car I removed the big ugly ford bracket and went to the local auto parts store and a small bracket flush bracket.

It was much nice a clean looking that the stock mount.

It was similar to the one on the left.....http://www.licenseplateshop.com/misc/brackets.php

I had mine in the front windshield for a year or so, got tired of being pulled over and asked about.

Biggest problem I have now is my beagle chewing on it

The law in MD is that your front tag has to be on the car...I say either tuck it in the grill or bend it just so the numbers show and velcro it to the bottom of the bumper where the "air vent" is. I have mine tucked into my eurotag, bent forward...I havent been bothered since I took it out the inside of the car...

No, they are just a flat "L" shaped piece of metal. You mount the vertical part to the back of your plate, facing upward, the horizontal part goes at the top of the radiator opening, so your plate ends up in front of the bumper. If you put it on upside down, your plate will block part of the lower radiator opening, which is bad. It's not that hard to figure it out...

You could try my grill-less grill mod and put your plate there. It's a win-win!

Here in the Islands, it is required...Bummer

After awhile, you just get used to it...The last thing I want ...is to give the LEO a reason to stop me...

Besides, most people just see my rear bumper, if you know what I mean...

Here's what I did on Sherm's red car.

Just got some straight bars(already had holes in them) and bent them in the center, dipped them in neoprene dip so they don't rust, drilled 2 1/4" holes under the bumper to mount the brackets, make the holes just a bit smaller than the bolts you use so they won't spin when you tighten the nuts, then I put some 3m protective plastic where the bolts go thru and where the bumpers are up at the tag. The bumpers are just some vacuum caps.
