From what I've heard, the 2003 had the same trans as the CV & MGM.

The 2004 had the trans from the F-150.

I would imagine the 2004 would be more durable, but I'm no expert.

    Not sure if they're interchangeable.
Are you planning on a JMOD?

    03 is a 4r70w 04 is a 4r75w. From factory the 75 has stronger internals.

    That is the correct answer.

Just make sure whatever trans you get is a 4r70W or 4r75W from similar car like MGM CV or truck like F-150, keep in mind that most vans come with 4r70E which is a pile of J UNK!!

In defense of the 4r70W, there isn't THAT much difference between it and the 4r75W.

Primary change is in several components, IIRC, same basic design and the majority of the parts are the same, correct?

I mean, it's not like a 4r70W is gonna grenade when you jump on the gas (just ask Paul Casey)...
