    Get yours rebuilt.

A good rebuilder can usually get upgraded components.

I would first check to see what it is first. If its an original to the car or a period correct alternator definitely get it rebuilt. If it was replaced over the last few years with an off-the-shelf unit I'm not sure you should worry about having someone rebuild it.

Power master makes a nice 1 wire unit that eliminates the need for the external regulator , and I believe there is a company that makes one that looks like the original generator that your car was equipped with . If you are going to upgrade from a generator, I have a bracket fabricated to mount it on the original water pump in the same location , I’m assuming you have an FE powered car . I have there brackets laser cut . Let me know if I can help out

If I remember correctly, the first year Ford began equipping cars with alternators is 1965. My family owned a '64 Ford Custom for about 12 years, it had a 223 6 cylinder and I know it used a generator. My younger sister's first car was a '64 Falcon with a 170 engine, same generator system.

Please verify this car is using the original style charging system or if it has been modified to accommodate an alternator.

Alternator standard on a 1963 full size Mercury (Monterey & Marauder).
    Was optional on the Galaxie.
