No, it won't. Plus, cooler is not better...engines are most efficient and have lower wear at the temperature the manufacturer designed. In addition, you'd need to be tuned for one that low.

what RF said...thermostat needs a tune if not stock which i think is 192. a 180 may be of some use if tuned for it.

The only thing you 'tune' for is changing the temperature the cooling fan turns on. THATS IT

I run a Reisch Performance 170 stat. Marty modified his tune for it. I get consistent temps between 170 & 178.

    https://reischeperformance.com/

Good info on cooling system in general, why a low temp stat, 160 vs 170 vs 180 stats, 4.6DOHC refill / burp procedure, more ways to improve your cooling system and tuning parameters.

The factory thermostat is 188°, so it's already several degrees cooler than any Crown Vic or Grand Marquis. The problem is that parts store computers think the MM is just a fancy GMQ and don't realise there's a difference.

If your engine never reaches the correct engine temperature, the computer will retard the transmission shift points and sometimes the overdrive will not fully engage and it will waste more gasoline. I thought that with a tune you could correct this but no.

    learn something every day

    fastblackmerc,

Thanks for that link. That is indeed a great writeup on lower temp 'stats. Sounds like Reisch know their stuff.

Ditto everyone on this thread. I learn so much from this forum. Getting a Marty tune soon for stock '04 and now I know what to plan for.
