Wanting to get a CB or the like

Well, I just got an Escort 8500 X50, and would also like to get a good CB or Police Scanner. I am considering the Uniden Bear Tracker, but know of no one who has used one.

Does anyone here have any recomendations on a good CB for the $$$. I would prefer one w/ Green Lighting, but any will do.

Sorry, had one years ago but stupidity on the CB got so out of hand that the thing was useless for its intended purpose, so out it went. Don't know what the situation is now. If you just need close range comm. with people you are traveling with the Motorola Talkabout 2 way radio Tallboy loaned me for the convoy across Alligator Alley worked so well for the 10 of us I have since bought a pair. Great bargains on Ebay for new and used. Good luck. Dennis

I'm still in search for a flexible 2way radio that...

1. Does not look like a matel toy
2. Dosn't have that stupid and big "PUSH HERE TO TALK" button in the center of the radio
3. Looks somewhat professional
4. Reasonably priced.

Check out a one of these: RCI 2970

I have one with all the 'golden screwdriver' goodies.

Nice band coverage plus CB (11 meters) and POWER!

They also make a wimp model, the 2950 with less power.

Check out the Motorola T7100R. Lots of features, adult appearance, more power 2 watt and recharge batteries. Got them brand new in the pkg. for $34.99.List is $90.00. Not refurb. $10.00 shipped. Work great. Seller may still have more. I'll check if you are interested. Dennis

I picked up a set of rechargeable Motorola Talkabout® T5950 Series Two-Way Radios for just such uses. Correction: I actually have the T6500R series radios; but many of the features are the same as the one below. Specs are below:

The T5950 series have the following features:

7 GMRS/FRS 1 watt Channels
7 FRS ½ watt Channels
8 GMRS 1 watt Channels
99 Interference Eliminator Codes, which help minimize interference by providing multiple code combinations (that's twice as many as the T57xx series!)
1W Transmit Power
10 Audible Call Tones
Talk Confirmation Tone
Keypad Lock
Backlit Display
Transmit LED
Battery Meter Indicator
Audible Low Battery Alert
Voice Activation that lets you talk hands-free when used with optional accessories
Audio Accessory Connector (Single Pin)
Removable Swivel Belt Clip
Time Out Timer
QT Noise Filter
Scan
VibraCall® Alert
FCC GMRS License Required
NOAA Weather Channels(02)
Two NiCd batteries, transformer, and two-pocket desktop charger
One Year Manufacturer's Warranty

I don't understand why they sell GMRS if you need an FCC license - or is it "you need an license *cough* *cough*"

If you get one, and use it, will the black suburbans surround you?

Kiljoy... I've been using the Escort 8500 X50 (blue lighting) in combination with a Radio Shack hand held CB (+ NOAA weather alert frequencies) for about two years now with excellent results. Resurected an old magnetic mount whip antenna from the seventies (kept from an old Lafayette CB I once had), placed it on the trunk and hooked it up to the hand held. Have put about 20,000 miles on the MM traveling all over the southern and midwestern U.S. with this set-up plus about another 20,000+ miles with it installed in various rental vehicles (for foul/winter weather travel while the MM garage sleeps in FL) and it has performed flawlessly thus far. As Dennis pointed out there is alot of garbage talk on the CB but the trucker chatter while monitoring ch 19 will alert you to most traffic enforcement units out on the open highway. This combo has, so-far at least, worked 100% for me on not getting stopped. Good luck my friend.... Oh, BTW a police radio scanner in your vehicle might cause some problems with the cops in some states as will the radar detector in VA.

As I understand the regs on it, you only need the FCC license if you are using the GMRS channels or the overlapping FRS/GMRS channels. This is probably due to the higher power and greater range. I got my license to be in the "safe" zone just in case I was asked. Seems the MM groups like to run on Channel 5 or 6 which happens to be in the shared FRS/GMRS range. The back of the package clearly indicates that an "FCC GMRS License is Required".

Understood.

WalMart had a set of Cobra's on sale for 31 bucks, they were the 8mile variety. I've been thinkin' of grabbing a set to upgrade my very old FRS's that were only good for about 1-2 miles....

I purchased a Cobra unit off ebay approx a year ago, it has the white face with the green lights, I got it specifically to install in the Marauder, I just never got around to installing it. The unit looks NIB, I got it for around 50 bux if i'm not mistaken, that reminds me, I gotta find it and find a place to install it in my grand prix. I'll take some pics and get the model number off it for you if you'd like.

I also have some pretty decent looking FRS/GMRS motorola talkabouts, they are rather professional looking, i picked them up at BJs about a year ago as well for like 45bux, came with 2 radios, a charging station, and 2 hands free kits. Pretty good deal.
