    Anti-Theft Devices

Recently I have been parking more and more in Chicago, and next week I will actually leave the MM in a parking garage overnight. I've done online research, best I could be patient with on 56k, and all the devices seem to cancel eachother out saying they don't work. The pedal lock said it took 30 minutes to disable, then another website said it is merely a minor detail for the professional. How about the club? when I say anti-theft I am not talking about alarms that scream all night long, nor little key fobs that inform you when you are getting shafted.

I would much rather walk up to a broken window and some shuffled papers than an open parking spot and two black marks.

What are your experiences with this stuff?

An aftermarket anti-theft device is a good idea. A simple one is to hook a switch in the brake light circuit. Flip the switch and you cant get the car out of park.

Club is not a good idea.
All they need to do is cut the steering wheel.
It takes them a whole 30 seconds to do that.

There is a product that you can lock onto your brake, it is called the AutoLock.
It will lock on the brake pedal shaft, and press against the firewall,
so the brake pedal can't be depressed.
It is locked with a 7 pin cylinder type lock, and its made of very high grade steel.

Here is the least expensive place to purchase one.
    AutoLock
I've had mine for about 4 years, and I use it whenever I'm going to be parking
in a place that I am not comfortable with.
It also comes with a bright yellow steering wheel cover that warns of its installation.

Because it installed in a tight space, it is hard for most people to even get at it
to mess with it, but it is very simple to install.

Why not pop the fuel pump relay and stick it in your pocket and be done with it?
I do that when I park my car at the airport.

When I had my F350 I had a "Cyclops" Anti Theft Module, just replace your Injector/Fuel Pump Relay with that, and it wont start without the special remote, just crank like its got no gas in it.

You'd be amazed at how easy it is to defeat the brake shift interlock... either by brute force or by simply pulling the wires for the switch.
This is why the brake club is worthless.

....hmmm. Hadn't thought of the brute force. But as far as pulling the wires off the switch, that would only acheive the same result of a locked brake pedal. I did this on the company car. And It works!!

Keep in mind, a thief is looking for an easy mark. If your car is difficult to steal, they will move on. IF the thief is able to get it running w/o the PATS key, not being able to shift it may just be all it takes for me and my friend Mr. Glock to arrive.

Which reminds me..... I think I will have the windows etched with the VIN#.

What makes you say an AutoLock is worthless ?
How you gonna stop the car once you get going ???

Autolock is WORTHLESS. All a thief has to do is step HARD (brute force) or disable the shift interlock, drive it SLOWLY onto a flatbed and he has your car.

As for disabling the shift interlock:
Cut the power to the interlock switch and you've disabled it. I tried this on my dad's E-250. It actually has a separate fuse for interlock and he hates it. So I got rid of it for him.

I tried every way I could to install the autolock in a way that it would work on my 2000 Vic. Needless to say, all of them were returned.

I got a question? Does everyone have the little black sticker on the windows that say DSS...Dealer Security System. I discovered this little electronic key under the dash board. Pull it out when the car is running and it continues to run. Cut it off and try to start it back...doesn't even click. The dash board lights up but the car says nothing. Does anyone else have this little dohicky and if so how would a thief get around it?

I like the steering wheel club and the Autolock. They both can be easily defeated. But, it takes some effort and time. A thief is looking for a quick get-away. So, anything that will make it take longer may be a deterent. Plus, the steering wheel club gets in the way of stealing the air bag. I certainly would not rely on these items alone however.
