I've heard German inspections make California look like slackers. They even check the condition of the brake fluid...

Nah they don't check dents and fluid condition. But can't have rust or any leaks and all lights need to work, can't be super low to the ground, tires cant stick past gender, etc.

I saw an episode of Top Gear (admittedly it was years ago) where they demonstrated the German inspection process and the inspector used little test strips to check the condition of the brake fluid. Of course, things change and Top Gear was not always a bastion of honesty, but...

Congratulations, you will be overjoyed when you have everything completed and you have passed the Technischer Überwachungsverein (TUV) inspection. I know personally how tough that inspection is.

I was at Spangdahlem from 1979-1981, shipped a Dodge Van over (Big Mistake). So I purchased a 1970 Volkswagen Beetle with only 100,000 Kilometers from a local farmer. He could not register it due to some rust on side boards and back bumper. I could have it inspected on base, threw some Gorilla Hair Fiberglass to the rusted areas and pressed on. Took a trip thru northern Germany and crossed into the Netherlands for the trip back south. At the border check they pulled the car over a pit so they could inspect underneath. They came back puzzled and asked, "The American Inspection really passed the inspection?". They let me press on, but for a moment I didn't think I was going to have a car to drive. I really loved that little Beetle.
