Poor Man's Dead Pedal
I don't want to take anything away from KB and the other fine providers on this site but check this out: I've had the idea of a dead pedal in mind for a while now. The other day I was walking behind our body shop and spied the front half of a 2000-2001 Taurus or sable that we had used the front clip to repair a customer car. It was complete from the instrument panel forward, I noticed the accellerator pedal pad had the same pattern as my MM gas pedal. I removed the 2 10mm bolts that retained the pedal assy. Removed the c-clip that held the pedal to the bracket and set them aside. I have a friend that specializes in safety systems for racing vehicles and we discussed an appropriate mounting procedure. Really this was overkill because the most straight forward method was the best. The pedal support was cold rolled steel and while it is very sturdy (I can stand on it), it would bend in the event of an accident.
First I used a hacksaw to cut about 4 inches of unused rod from the top part of the accellerator pedal (the part that holds the cable). Then, with the kick panel removed and the carpet pulled back, the pedal was installed upside down against the left kick panel. The pivot was used as a guide, I drilled a hole in the cowl side panel which the pivot would slide into. The bottom was welded adjacent to the pivot and on the very bottom of the cut off part. This took less than an hour and I swear it looks bone stock!
