    ABS problem

I have 1995 Lincoln Town Car, Signature Cartier edition. When ever I apply the brakes, the abs activates 99% of the time, it also seems to do this 100% of the time if the steering wheel is cranked left. I cleaned the tone rings on the front and the pickups, but it didnt make a diff. The abs light is not glowing or flashing, but I verfifed that it comes on briefly on start up just as the other idiot lights.

Any Ideas guy? Thanks for the help

Sounds like a bad sensor. I had this happen in my 93 explorer. I had to replace both of them in the front after having Ford replace the ball joints. The air hammer jarred them hard enough to make them inoperable.

Did you clean the rears too ?
The ABS Sensor are prone to drying out with age.
Once the plastic case cracks water gets in, it shorts out the sensors.

Ford has a TSB on this. Due to the age of the vehicle, it is difficult to say if one would spend the $$$ on having this taken care of at a Ford or Lincoln Mercury dealer.

    The TSB # is 98-11-1.
    (#6178 in black per FPIC)
Call 1-800-FORD-788 and press "1". Have the last 6 of your VIN handy. You will get the numbers for FREE. You'll pay $$$ for the certificate.

MM traded in 8/9/13 @ 128909 miles. It was fun for almost 8 years. I met airmercpun on 1/17/14. He was the new owner of my former ride. -Now gone.

Update: back in the game with a late build 03 GMGS with some MM add ons like Escape audiophile radio w/Sirius sat radio, rear sway bar, catback exhaust, and header panel.

    Rest In Peace:

See my garage file for part numbers and whatnot.

IMHO, this site- the members that I chat with- and the ones that I now Hang with- are like my 2nd family. There is such an ongoing welcome feeling here that even members who don't or no longer own the MM can feel.

Sensors or if there is any adjustment the gap

between the sensor and tone ring is to large..
loose wheel bearings or damage caused when
removing wheels drums and rotors...I had a lumina
when the sensor stopped sending a signal(defective)
the ecu assumed the brakes where locked and started
releasing the brakes..it was scary coming down some
of those off ramps...Needless to say the car didn't
    stay in the driveway long...
sounds like a bad wire to the sensor test with an ohm meter
across the terminal (unplugged)to the sensor .
.a reading of 2,000 to 10,000ohms(2,000 is common)..
wiggle the wire when checking a bad wire...
Also set the meter to volts AC and spin the wheel
you should get a voltage reading...
A manual should give u exact specs.and test ing procedures.
    this is just general info...

Have you had your tires rotated when the problem started? I had the same problem with my MM and when I took the car to the dealer, it turned out that the light was on because my tires were rotated wrong. Good luck
