oil usage first few hundred miles

MM back on the road after a long sleep - ~3 years

no smoke on start up --no smoke while running, car runs great!

---either a stuck PCV valve...getting a new one MONDAY

    ---or she's got a drinking problem. 1 qt 5W-20 in 320 miles.

maybe it will settle down, dry valve stems seals, light ring rust...

I'm going to 5W -30 full synthetic...might try an additive to soften up the umbrella seals...any ideas here? By the way, if it winds up a qt every 600-800 or even 1000 miles I don't care that much..I see only one PCV valve on the pass side, there is NOT supposed to be any thing on the drivers side valve cover expect a hose--correct?

Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer.Have used this for years in most of my vehicles. Have a 87 5.0 Mustang that burned a qt. every 500 miles when I bought it with 83k miles.Use Lucas in it every oil change slows it down to a qt every 1500 miles at first as it burns it off it loses about 300 miles ea qt by the time it needs another oil change it's back at close to 500.It now has 249k on it. I'm not a big fan of additives & magic cures but the whole line of Lucas products actually work as advertised.

    OK here's the plan:

-switch to high mileage 5W-30 Walmart full synthetic/Motorcraft filter (of course)
    -new PCV valve fromFord
-oil separator from Harbor Freight plumbed into pass side PCV line
    -lucas oil stabilizer
-lucas fuel injector cleaner (in case one injector is washing down the cyl walls

    thoughts?

Verify the flter element is designed for synthetic oil.
    Most air separators are not

    Thanks guys...good responses...

I'm thinking: the difference between a synthetic oil separator and a non-specific one would be mesh size, the HF one is 40 micron ...and the difference between dino oil and synthetic is one oil is lower viscosity even when cooled. So! a separator designed for air compessor oil ought to do the job. I'll post pix of my set up.

I would say your consumption is quite high

    Hmmm...

160 miles on the new oil change to 5W-30 Synthetic and additive..Dipstick reads FULL.

    maybe

---light rust on the oil rings during a 2 1/2 year hiatus
    ---dried out valve stem seals
---skunk 3 year old gas washing down the cyl walls instead of burning cleanly
---the higher wt oil mentioned above

    will continue to monitor!

600 miles and 1/2 Qt down...my additive must not be sealing up the valve stem seals as well...on the plus side not much oil in the catch can. Must not be getting a bunch of blow by past the rings

Update to the update 800 miles and still full, must have pulled the dipstick too quick at the 600 mile check. So it was not 1/2 qt down afterall.

Lesson learned. I was in a hurry. Let these big wide heads drain all the way back down before checking the oil.
