Same here. Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge is only about 3 miles from my house via the Occoquan River. Mason Neck is one of the top 10 locations in the USA for eagle watching. It was founded in 1965 after 2 nests were discovered. The site is now permanent home to 7 nesting pairs of eagles and it is not unusual for 50-60 eagles to be present during the wintering season. The state park also hosts the largest Great Blue Heron grouping in the mid-Atlantic with some 1,400 nests.
It is not unusual to spot eagles soaring high above the community and along the river/Occoquan Reservoir just enjoying their lazy circling or in search of prey or fish. Some of them have some pretty wide wingspans.
