    A/C compressor

Gave the car a good once over before winter storage and I noticed that the a/c compressor is leaking around a seal (front portion of the case) not the shaft .

What are the best options, rebuild or replace?

If replacing is the best way to go can anyone recommend a unit, stock, after market?

I'll replace the accumulator drier and orifice tube while I'm at it so thoughts on those are also welcome.

    Car has 53,000 on it.

Local dealer wants a small fortune for a ford unit and I try to avoid the stealership whenever I can.

    Thanks for reading!

I am not sure AC compressor rebuilds are a DIY thing. That being said you may find a local rebuilder. Once the system is breached, the receiver/dryer and orifice tube should be replaced. Many replacement compressors have a lifetime warranty "with related parts purchase". I did the ENTIRE system in my 2006 Taurus for less than $800. The labor was easy.

You would need to recover the Freon in the system first. Then after installing everything it would need to be vacuumed properly and tested for leaks. Then charged with the right amount of Freon. Make sure the compressor has oil in it too b4 installing, sometimes brand new ones can come somewhat dry or only with a little amount of oil in it. Taking it to a professional would be the best thing to do. Good Luck!

I have access to a Bosch ac recovery / fill unit. The shop owner who is a friend told me to source a compressor, drier, accumulator and orifice tube as even his costs are crazy for a compressor locally. I'll get one online and have it shipped here, replacement will be done in the spring.

My buddy is being cheap with my money, lol! Not a bad thing I guess.

I was hoping someone could share their experience with a brand or source.

    Thanks.

The A/C compressor seal it cheap and easy to replace.

As mentioned you'll need to recover the R134, evacuate & recharge. I'd replace all the seals, receiver / dryer and orifice tube. Get an aluminum receiver / dryer.
