Flat back diff covers = bad for the bearings...

I learned some new info today.

Due to fluid dynamics the high capacity flat diff covers actually do more harm than good. They create bad fluid dynamics in the diff causing bearing starvation, reduce HP and fuel mileage.

What's going on behind your flat-back diff cover?

    Very interesting videos.
I never really thought about differential covers...except for the aluminum 8.8 covers with the rear girdle support jack screws.
I've got one in the basement....gotta go check out the internal shape of it.
Now when I see the diesel trucks with those big, aftermarket flat back designs, I'll just smile at their wasted money and overworked rear axle fluid.

Interesting videos. Funny when you stop to think about what he is experimenting with seems so obvious but no one except the OEM engineers took the time to think it through.

Looking forward to the finished product.

Have had the Ford Racing Performance Parts axle girdle installed since 2004.
    • it doesn't have the flat back.
    • it doesn't cause dif' over-fill since the dif' housing fill port is used, though does provide for more lub' capacity.

Thanks for this. I viewed the Banks vid in recent weeks - completely educational. Thinking the FRPP cover on my Marauder diff is doing its job quite nicely.
