    Alternator wiring 63 marauder

Bought and installed new alternator, was wondering about the old wiring. I ran a wire from the alternator to the positive terminal on the battery and a ground wire to the engine. But the old style alternator had a plug in the back with about 4 or 5 wires attached to it and they run to a regulator by the horns and then into the firewall. Do I have to do anything with those old wires? Thanks in advance.

Yes, you're going to have to address those wires and the regulator. I might have a wiring diagram at home. I'll check later today.

Is the new alternator not an exact replacement?

    If so, why not?

Kirk, correct me if I am wrong, but aren't 1964 and older Ford vehicles with the original type charging systems equipped with generators rather than alternators?

In 1963 the Ford Galaxie came standard with a generator. An alternator was optional. However, the 1963 Mercury Monterey and Marauder came standard with an alternator.

The new one bolts right up and fits perfect. I’m going to save the old one just because but I just wanna get it back on the road. The new alternator has an internal regualtor, where as the old was was external. I appreciate you digging into it!

He's not inquiring about bolt-up, he's asking about wiring hookups.

If alt only has 1 pos to batt and a ground that is wiring for an alt with an internal regulator.

Those old cars had external regulators which means a number of additional wire connections to the alt from the regulator.

Do not run it w/o regulator hooked up, you'll trash the alt and cook the battery.

Charging perfect and everything’s working great. Bought a new power steering pump and it’s making a loud squealing sound like the old one did. Guessing I need to bleed the system. How you go about doing that? I lifted the car off the ground and turned the wheel left and right several times. When I set the car back down and turn the wheel it squeals again.

Can't help you with that one. I have no experience with PS.

Usually turning the steering wheel lock to lock multiple times with purge air from the system.
