If your mechanic is at all electrically-literate, give him this link. Scroll down about half-way and you'll see the discussion of how the PCM-controlled alternator works. There's a bit to wade through, but it's worth it.

Its real simple. One wire supplies battery power to the allternator. Another wire sends a signal to turn on. Its either 5V or 12, don't remember. The other wire is for the dash.

If it was me, I'd just borrow power from another source instead of replacing the computer.
Did he test the signal wire at the PCM yet?

I hope the OP is aware the alt harness has fuse links installed.

I offered that to him a week it so ago.

If he can’t do it he should show his mechanic.

Sorry for the lack of response. I really don't have the time to mess with the car during the week. I'll see what the weekend brings.

Also, I'm not a mechanic so I'm not familiar with some of the suggestions.

I appreciate all of the help!

I actually dread driving mine this weekend. It's at a friend's house, been there for about a month parked outside while I moved. The last POD was picked up Thursday so the driveway is clear, I can go get it now, but I'm not looking forward to it randomly shutting off, stumbling at idle, etc. etc. during the 20 mile trip.

Sorry to hear. I didn't know that you were having problems with the DBP.

I had a rough idle and throwing codes that was solved with Techron concentrated fuel injector cleaner. Whole bottle into a half tank and drove it for about a half hour. Cleared the miss and codes.

I am still screaming bad battery cable leading to the alternator

If it has no voltage it work

Use a set of jumper cables as temporary battery cables to diagnose

Edit. The alt won't work if the main battery cable is not good

I fixed 100s of equipment at Katrina, 1000s annually for 20 years

Can you at least try it?

Voltage drop all of the wires too and from the alternator. No more than .5v for +, no more than .2v for negative. Might as well do the big 3 upgrade if you find anything

I got called into work over the weekend so I never got a chance to try the suggestions. Took it to a Ford dealer this morning. Mechanic found that it was a break in the line from the PCM to the alternator. He rewired another one and I'm good to go! Thank you everyone for your suggestions and offers to help. Mark

    Good to hear its fixed.

When you said it had no voltage at the back of the alternator, that is why i said the cable was broken.

It had voltage, but just wasnt charging.

Very common for the wiring to break at the tops of the crash bar on these panthers. You might have more broken wiring in the near future.
