sheepskin mitt may be causing scratching

Hello all

I thought to reflect on something regarding quality mitts that I use on my black paint

I just bought a new sheepskin mitt to replace my other main mitt

It's a Genuine Sheepskin Mitt by Simoniz

As I endeavor to ensure I don't scratch my black paint, my concern is that this new mitt may be scratching my paint.

My previous mitt always left nice white soap suds (I use Turtle Wax Zip Wax car wash soap) on my finish, when I applied the mitt on the car, whereas this new one doesn't. It's odd however I can only presume the soap is on there on the car.

I bought a Simoniz Synthetic Wool Mitt with Memory Foam for my secondary mitt for the lowers, which was half the price of the Sheep Skin one.

I wonder if the fact that the Genuine Sheepskin Mitt by Simoniz isn't relaying the soapy white suds on my car they way my old mitt used to is also related to my perception that the mitt is causing scratches (I noted a few wash scratches on a panel which was odd as I am very careful when washing the car).

It doesn't make sense though as my other mitt was a good one but not genuine sheepskin; this mitt is supposed to be better.

Now i wonder if the Simoniz Synthetic Wool Mitt with Memory Foam would be better for the uppers if the sheepskin one is scratching.

I use the two bucket method by the way plus I hose down the mitt after dunking it in the water bucket

Are you using the "2 or 3 bucket" method?

What are you using for soap? Does your bucket have a dirt grid, so dirt falls to the bottom? Are there any tags or labels on the mit?

Yes I use the two bucket method plus I use Turtle Waxes Zip Wax solution.

I don't use dirt guards yet however after washing immaculate black paint cars since 1990 I haven't had many problems with scratching considering the time I take to properly wash.

I've always used slightly lesser quality furry mitts and this is actually my first genuine sheepskin mitt however it doesn't transfer the suds onto the car and I noted some scratching on what is otherwise new paint.

I am wondering if i should revert back to regular fur mitts or use my new synthetic wool mitt instead

and no I am very careful with mitt tags

The tags on the sheepskin mitt is on the other side which I don't use unless I temporarily flip it over at which point I am conscious of that tag and I hold the mitt at an angle to prevent the tag from touching the paint

Box of micro fibers would do you wonders. Remove tag before using

I thought sheep skin was a chamois, both of those things look like fake fibers, and that box is saying it remains the shape of the car is a meme in the rough, luckily these things are solved over time I would like see how they work on a red car

I switched to a 100% Cotton mitt.

I use a foam gun.

No bucket.

I assume (uh-oh) that you CD-tested the mitt in question and it's not marring the paint in-and-of itself.


Zip Wax Car Wash has pretty mediocre encapsulation and lubricity (unless they've upgraded it recently). Using a better shampoo might help a bit.


Most of the time, wash-induced marring comes from dirt getting stuck in the mitt, the mitt is then moved across the paint (say...across the rest of the panel) and the result is marring. But again, that's assuming that everything that ever touches the paint has passed the CD-test; no, it's not perfect, but it is a decent approximation of the clear used on Panthers.
