I've always been a bit confused on these things. Are they more beneficial for a boosted car or are they just as beneficial for a NA car?

In the case of our cars, both S/C and N/A. The MM is known for accumulating oil vapor through the intake and this helps with that issue.

FWIW I have a kit from J&L (formerly JLT) on my 2016 Suburban, which uses GDI technology and practically requires a catch can. It is very solid build quality, nice engineering and simple installation. Has been working great for tens of thousands of miles.

How necessary it is on a non-GDI engine can be debated, but I can vouch for their quality engineering and product.

I have a JLT catch can on my 2015 F150 3.5EcoBeast. You'd be surprised what it catches.

Opted for UPR's catch can (and extension) on my 2011 F-150 5.0L

Reason: It's just another filter that helps eliminate/minimize the crud that ...

    • lowers the fuel octane.
    • cokes the intake manifold and throttle body.
    • adds carbon built-up on the valves.
    • increases compression due to carbon build-up on the pistons.
    • minimize sparkplug fouling.
    • contaminates the catalytic converters.

I am installing a catch can during my Eaton swap so it can be seamlessly integrated and installed in a stealth location. Also doing one on my mom's 2017 Kia Sportage with GDI. It's crucial on GDI because there's no fuel to wash the backs of the valves - pretty much gets oil coked until it's out of control.
