Cool Time To Rebuild My Transmission

After doing a little research and asking a few people for recommendations,
I've chosen Fred Brown Performance Transmissions in Bay Shore, NY.
    http://www.fbperformance.com

Since my Dealer had to go to Bay Shore to get my Marauder,
I figured I'd have to bring her back home to get any major work done she needed.

They are going to do a full PRO STREET rebuild of my core, add a 300M Input Shaft,
and rebuild my Torque Converter with new parts/stronger parts where needed.

I asked about my differential, and they suggested getting rid of the pos factory one and getting something stronger.
I've always wanted a Torsen and they agreed it would be a very good choice.
They are getting prices on the Torsen now, and will reuse my gears
as long as they are in good shape.
Since I've been changing the oil every 30k miles, they should be in good condition.
My Marauder has seen mostly highway miles and only lightly loaded.

If everything works out well, I will be bringing her to Fred on Monday
and back home before the end of the week.

While you're at it might as well do the tailshaft lube mod kit and j-mod.

    I don't need either.
The newer tailshafts come with a larger bearing surface.
With this tranny build the J-Mod won't be necessary.

Another change, I'm going with the Eaton Limited Slip instead of the Torsen.
While the Torsen is geared, the Eaton is just as strong and can be serviced easily.
The Torsen would have to be removed if it had any problems.

The larger bearing surface doesn't help or increase "splash" lubrication which is the only way fluid gets back into the tailshaft, that's where the TS lube mod helps. Just saying.

Good choice.I have been using a FB-4STB trans w/manual valve body in Purple Panther for 5 years with no problems.

You'd probably be better off with an off the shelf aftermarket torque converter with the stall rating of your choice. What exactly is the shop going to replace inside the converter?

Also you mentioned an aftermarket Torsen diff. Check the price on that, and compare it to the 31 spline Terminator OEM carbon clutch diffs that Tousley Ford is selling for $158.00 + shipping. That is a STEAL. Depending on what you are spending on that Torsen diff, you could possibly have the awesome 31 spline Cobra diff and a nice set of aftermarket 31 spline axles for the price of said Torsen diff.

    All just food for thought

    Already looked into this.
Rebuilding my TC is $395. Blue Oval Chips has an upgraded TC for $455.
They are doing the same thing that BOC does to theirs
for $60 less and it will still be my original core.

I am going to call Tousley Ford about the Diff package.
What do you suggest for 31-spline axles ???

    Thanks !!!

Hey, my bad about saying they were $158. Further down in the thread on SVT Performance, he mentions that they are $174.65. Still a killer deal.

    Thread: http://www.svtperformance.com/forums...-158-77-a.html

As far as axles, opinions will vary depending on who you ask but I've run Strange and Moser, and had zero problems with either. I would be fine with either and it would come down to price for me.

The only real choices you'd have to decide on are screw-in vs press-in (I prefer screw in due to ease of changing if you should crossthread or break one.. breaking one is unlikely unless you're making big power and drag racing a bunch) - the other choice is stock length studs vs 3". 3" are nice if you are drag racing a bunch because they allow you to meet the NHRA rule about the threads sticking out past the nut a certain distance when running slicks, but are not required for you to do. 3" studs also stick way out and look odd with a factory wheel because of that.. and you have to run an open-ended lugnut. If it were me, I'd choose stock length.

    Hope this helps.

Good deal on the TC stuff you mentioned. Sounds like a good call.

I'm checking with Ray (TheDealer) on Ford 31-spline now.
    (6W1Z-4234-A)

I'll entertain any other quotes until I make my decision.
With the COBRA diff, I might just go with the Ford Axles.

BOY, I never knew how sloppy the drive train was from FORD.

    The tranny is excellent now.
Works even better together with Lidio's tune.
Shifts quick and nice when I'm easy on it.
Shifts Quick and FIRM when I jump on it.

The rear axle is smooth and quiet now.
It used to clunk when I went from drive to coasting and back.

Fred Brown did a great job for me !!
I recommend anyone in the NY/NJ/CT area to go to Fred Brown
for all your transmission and rear axle work !!!
All he does is performance transmission and rear axle.
Fred has been doing this for more than 20 years !
